ESTIMATED CROP YIELD
INCREASE IN WHEAT OTHER CROPS HIGHER : [Pm United Peess Association.] WELLINGTON, February 8. The estimated average Dominion yields . per acre of wheat, oats and barley ‘ for the season 1939-40, according to figures published in the ‘Gazette,’ are as follows, the actual average yields for the last season being given in parentheses:—Wheat, /33 bushels (29.40); oats, 44 (47.86); barley,.36 (40.03). In accordance with these estimates, the total yield of wheat for the 1939-40 season,should be approximately 8,370,000 bushels," compared with the ascertained yield of 5,564,136 bushels last season. The total yield of grain should be about 2,240,000 bushels, .compared with 2,604,817 last season, and of barley 870,000 bushels, compared with 1,076,774 the previous season. MINING NEWS NEMONA RETURN The Nembna Gold Dredging Company Ltd. : return for the week ended February 2 is as follows:—15oz gold for 134 hours (5,000 yards). NOKOMAI RETURN. The secretary of the Nokomai Gold Mining Company Ltd. reports a final wuch-up, which resulted in a return of 7"20z 18dwt from a paddock of an area of approximately one-third of an acre. STANDARDISED WOOLPACKS IMPORTS AND MANUFACTURES [Peh United Press Association.J WELLINGTON, February 8. Standardisation of the size of' the woolpacks manufactured in or imported into New Zealand _is provided for in the regulations gazetted to-night. Save with the consent of the Minister of Industries and Commerce, woolpacks shall_ have an interior measurement of 42 inches in length by 27'inches in breadth and 27 - inches in depth. WEST COAST GOLD DREDGES Large-scale gold dredging is attracting wide attention in both Australia and li[ew Zealand, and the re-sults-indicate that this industry offers a most attractive opportunity for the investment of capital. The operating profit of the Arahura Dredge for five months, August-De-comber, ' was £31,387 and of the Kanieri Dredge for 12 months £B3006. The £l shares of these companies are , selling at 34s and 33s respectively. Both of these companies were floated by the well-known “ Pratten Group,” ot • Sydney, after thorough and systematic prospecting. The- same group has recently completed the prospecting of another large area near Kumara, which shows values : equally as good as _ Kanieri and Arahura, and a company is now being floated to work this area known as “ Taramakau Gold Dredging Limited.” Some of these shares are being offered for subscription in New_ Zealand and are being readily subscribed for. ■ Applications for shares and further particulars can be obtained from licensed sharebrokers.—B/2/40.
