CHALMERS RIDES WELL

0. DRURY TAKES TWO TITLES OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIP CYCLING MEET Cyclists in the Otago championship meeting at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday found the going hard up the back straight—there was a strong wind blowing, which had most of the riders plugging hard. Luckily, there was a slight easing in strength before the 10-mi!e that made the race less arduous than earlier events, but the wind was still troublesome, and reflected on the times recorded throughout. Some riders had tho advantage of a lull, while others had to contend with the full blast; but, despite the wind, times were fast. Entries were large throughout, and the Invercargill team—X). Drury, T. Waddick, L. Johnston, and I. Leal—contributed in a good measure to the success of the meeting. The outstanding Otago performer was W. Chalmers, who rode a fine race to set a new club record for 10 miles. He returned 22min 54 4-ssec. With stronger opposition, he could no doubt have recorded better figures, for he was crowding the pace-makers all the way, - O. Drury rode an exceptionally fine race in annexing the 1,000 metre time trial championship, eclipsing the previous best time of an Otago rider. He clocked Imin 21 4-ssec—2-ssec outside the Otago record. His success did not end there, for he also won tho 500 metres sprint, after a bewildering quence of heats, beating his fellowrider—T. Waddick—in the three match races that comprised the final. Third place was contested by W. Chalmers and J. M'Connell, the Dunedin riders, the latter “ jumping ” Chalmers to steal a surprise win. ■ The sprint is somewhat involved, from a spectator’s point of view. First of all, match races are run. Those riders who are placed second and third ride in the repercharge heats, then comes a final of the winners of these. Then the winners of the initial match races, along with the first three riders in the repercharge final, contest the quarter-final heats. Winners in these go into the semi-finals. Those placed second in semi-final heats then ride off for third place in the final, while the semi-final heat winners ride three match races, the winner of two taking the championship, and the _ other second place. It is a race that is very popular on the Continent, but has not “ naught on ” with local spectators. Results

TEN MILES, PACED. W. Chalmers 1 C. Hauseu 2 A. Tate ... 3 Time, 22min 54 4-ssec—an .Otago record. There was a big field for this event, including O. Drury, of Invercargill, but he withdrew early, along with a large number of local riders. It was seen in the early stages that Chalmers and Hansen would have a hard duel for first place, and after 10 laps they had lapped the field. However, as the pace they were cracking on began to tell, Hansen, who bad stuck_ to Chalmers’s wheel throughout the journey, began to drop hack, and Chalmers kept on, making the pace-makers work hard. He lapped Hansen and pedalled on brilliantly to finish with a fast sprint, bettering the club record for the distance. Hausen, a lap behind, must also have bettered the late record—he was a lap in front _ of the remainder of the field, from which Tate took third place by a narrow margin. 1,000 METRES TIME TRIAL. O. Drury (Invercargill), Imin 21 4-ssec 1 A. Umbers and W. Chalmers, Imin 26sec (equal) 2 E. Boyd, Imin 27 3-ssec ... ... 4 T. Waddick (Invercargill), Imin 27 4-ssec 5

Also started; A. Tate (1.28 1-5), L. Johnston (Invercargill, 1.28 2-5), C. Flowers, C. Hausen, and I. Leal (luvaroargill, 1.29 4-5), P. Maitland (1.30 4-5), M. M'Lachlan and J. Rogers t 1.30 4-5), R. Laws (1.35 1-5), Drury, in registering 1.21 4-5, bettered G. Foster’s time of 1.24 for the best local rider’s effort to date, made in 1929, and with more favourable conditions would have threatened the Otago record of 1.21 2-5 set by R. Ulmer (Wellington). It was an exceptionally good ride under the circumstances. 500 METRES SPRINT, First match: W. Chalmers 1, L. Johnstpn (Invercargill) 2, C. Flowers 3. Time, 14 2-ssec. Second match: A. Umbers 1, O.
