[From Ocb Oamard Correspondent.] BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Oamaru Borough Council was held last night. The architect’s plans for improvements to the Opera House, estimated to cost £10,600, including new public conveniences, were referred to the special committee. In order to assist the Swimming Club, season ticket charges at the baths were increased, except children’s tickets. The Community Week Executive’s recommendation to hand the balance of funds (£25) to the North End Hall Committee was adopted. It was decided to take steps to acquire the Medway street property of the Crawshaw Estate. It was agreed that, where trees planted on footpaths • encroached on the asphalt, the paths be asphalted an additional width not exceeding the encroachment. at no cost to the property owners. BOXING. The Waitaki Boys’ Junior High School boxing championships were held yesterday, the finals resulting as follows; —Fly-weight: T. Rowell beat A. Currie: Bantam-weight: B. Kilgour beat B. Collett. Welter-weight: W. Turner beat A. Smaill. Midget. I. Smith beat N. Robertson. < Paperweight: M. Bowen beat R. Gillies. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. At a meeting of the North Otago Horticultural Society, it was reported that its application for the 1941 na-
tional dahlia show had been submitted to the Dahlia Society of New Zealand. Members were asked to obtain data concerning historic trees in the district for submission to the Department of Agriculture. BAPTIST CAMP. A camp was held at Waianakarua during the week-end by the Baptist Young Women’s Bible Class. A church service was held at Herbert and a pio nic on Monday. RAINFALL. In the 24 hours to 9 a.m. yesterday 29 points of rain were recorded in Oamaru, making a total of 40 point* for the month. PERSONAL. Mr G. A. Gillies (Oamaru) has left on a six weeks’ visit to Australia. Miss E. M’Quade has returned to Oamaru after a tour of England andi the Continent. . Miss Rushworth (Auckland), president of the Methodist Women’s Missionary Auxiliary, is visiting Oamaru. PRIZE ESSAYS.
