LOCAL FOOTWEAR EXPANSION
MODIFICATION OF PLANS RECENT FINANCIAL DEVELOPMENTS [Pek United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, August 24. The efforts of New Zealand footwear factories to expand 1 their production may have to be modified because of the financial situation. Mr D. V. Wilson, president of the New Zealand Footwear Manufacturers’ Association, said to-day that the recent developments in the financial situation would definitely necessitate revision of the plans made by the industry for an increased output. He said that, in the absence of full details of how each unit in the industry was situated, he was not in a position to anticipate a reduction of staffs. It was not possible at this stage to discuss that. SHORTAGE OF FEMALE HANDS AUCKLAND, August 24. A reply to the fears expressed by the Bureau of Importers that the shortage of female operatives in the footwear and clothing trades will result in a serious shortage of supplies and a rise in prices, has been received from the Acting Minister of Customs (Mr Mason). The Minister, acknowledging a telegram on the subject from the bureau, states that an inquiry will be made into the reported shortage of female labour and into the necessity for the issue of import licenses as suggested.
