TRAMS OR BUSES.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —May 1 -auk Cr Gibson how he now attributes the life of a bus at approximately 12 years, when in all Ins previous statements he says from eight to 10 years? lam well informed that, at present, there are no buses in the Corporation 12 years old doing time-table work or even eight years. The statements made by Cr Gibson appear to be purely and simply guesswork. Furthermore he says that a bus pavs for itself in six and a-balf years. Can he say how many buses there are in the Corporation at the present tune that have paid for themselves? —f am, etc., 1 Woxinai. August 22. TO THU EDITOR Sir.—lt is with interest that 1 read Mr Gibson’s latest effort in trying to justify the famous report on the city tramwavs. Mr Gibson’s main concern should not be a section of the Tramways’ Union, but the majority of the ratepayers, and if given an opportunity the ratepayers will tell him in no uncertain manner what they think of his proposed change. He has stated that a sum of £3,110 yearly is to he saved on this alteration to the service. I wduld like to ask him if the £2,000 n year that was to have been saved on the restricted »service lias worked out to plan, or has this gone astray like the majority of the department’s lorecasts? For Mr Gibson to say that the repayment of the £6,500 borrowed to buy buses will not come out of rates contradicts the council’s own advertisement on the subject. It was stated at a council meeting that three of the buses needed replacing. Could the chairman of the Tramways Committee tell us if the renewal fund can stand this expenditure. If not, how are we going to get the money to replace these three buses? The people of this town won’t stand for what Mr Gibson is trying 16 Foist on ns, and if be would resign and contest a by-election on the tram versus bus issue lie would see for himself the state of mind of the ratepayers of this town.—J am, etc., August 22. Safety.
