COMMITTEE The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Football Union was held last night. The chairman was the president (Mr D. C. Jolly). REFEREES AND SCRUMS. Whether the practice adopted by referees last Saturday of placing the ball in the scrums ■ showed that this procedure was preferable to players doing so was discussed. There was a suggestion that a recommendation be made to the New Zealand Union advocating ing to the old rule of the referee placing the ball in the scrum. Mr J. Hayes said that the four referees of the games in the subsidiary competition on Saturday (when the old rule was played) were hot at all impressed that the change was an improvement. Because the matches were played in a holiday spirit it was difficult to gauge the effectiveness of the system. However, the Referees’ Association was willing to withhold judgment until the other three games were played. The Chairman commented that from the spectators’ viewpoint the matches on Saturday were made more attractive through the referees placing the ball into the scrum. No decision to voice the union’s opinion was reached. GENERAL. Because several members would be attending a military training camp during the vacation, the secretary of the Training College Club advised that the third grade team would not be able to fill its Engagements on Saturday, and also on September 2.—Referred to the Flag Committee. The applications of the Southern and Union senior teams for matches during the subsidiary competition on their home grounds were referred to the Flag Committee. The Tuapeka South Sub-union is to be asked for an explanation over its action in playing an unaffiliated club from South Otago—the Bruce Club.
