TERRITORIAL ASSOCIATION
MEETING Of EXECUTIVE A meeting of the executive of the Territorial Association of Otago was held in the Caledonian Society’s board room last evening. The chairman (Dr Roland Fulton) presided, and members present were the mayor (Mr A. H. Allen), Colonel G. Barcay, Messrs M. Joel, M. Stewart, N. S. Wilson, H. L. Longbottom, W. F. Forrester, J. S. Douglas, J. M. White, L. A. Rhodes, J. Hogg, Mr W. J. Pirrett, S. G. Scoular, and Mrs S. M. Park. RECRUITING REPORT. A lengthy report was received from the district recruiting officer, Captain J. E. Green, covering his activities in Otago and Southland. Good progress was being made and branches of the association were being formed in a number of centres.—The report was adopted. SUB-COMMITTEES APPOINTED. The following sub-committees were appointed :—Finance, New Branches, and Art Union.—Dr Fulton (convener), Messrs Forrester, Stewart, and Douglas. Unit Visiting and Recruiting.—Messrs Forrester (convener), Longbottom, and White. Publicity.— Messrs M'Knight, Joel, and M'lndoe. Ladies’.—Mrs A. H. Allen (chairwoman), Mrs S. M. Park (deputychairwoman). Sports.—Messrs Hogg (convener), Smith, and Scoular. TOWN HALL DANCE. Reporting on the Town Hall Dance “ military night,” Mr Rhodes said that the organiser had been impressed by the orderly behaviour of the Territorials who had attended. He had suggested that a monthly military dance be held, the association to receive a proportion of the receipts from the Territorials. It was pointed out by two speakers that if this were agreed to there mi|ht be some danger or the recruits being commercialised, and the matter was referred to the Finance Committee for consideration. LADIES’ COMMITTEE. Mrs Park reported on the formation of a Ladies’ Committee, and said that the question had be.en raised.of the provision of a uniform for the lady workers, it was considered that the time was not yet ripe for this, but the provision of a distinctive badge might be considered. UNIFORMS CRITICISED. Reporting on a visit he had paid to one of the artillery units, Mr Rhodes remarked on the trousers which had been issued in place of the riding breeches and puttees previously worn. He considered these did not look smart and were not likely to encourage recruits to join, Tho Unit Visiting Committee was instructed to look into the matter while attending the parades of other units. NEW BRANCHES. Mr Hogg reported that he had attended a meeting at. Balclutha at which a branch of the association had been formed. This was a very active body and was carrying out good work. M [LITARY DEMONSTRATION. Reporting on the demonstration of training to be given at the Drill Hall on August. 31, Mr Joel said that arrangements were going on Satisfactorily. Application had been made lor two Bren gun carriers to be made available, but this had not been considered possible.—lt was decided that the Minister of Defence bo communicated with renewing the application.
