A. AND P. SOCIETY
MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society, held on Thursday afternoon, was attended by Messrs W. Lee (vice-president, in the chair), A. 0. Begg, J. Allison, S. Mosley, W. S. Thomson, B. S. Irwin, J. E. Brunton, S. P. Cameron, T. D. Dalziel* J. Mitchell, E. M. North, R. Gawn, J. Young, J. B. Blair, D. Ireland,_C. M. Bruce, H. M. Driver, D. M. Reid, and J. Hellyer. Before commencing the business of the meeting the Chairman referred to the deaths of Mr W. Kirk and Mr D. Phillips.—A resolution of sympathy was carried. The Finance Committee met on Tuesday and recommended payment of accounts amounting to £856 4s lOd, which included the Winter Show prize money. The bank balance was £1,027 19s 6d in credit. The Winter Show statement of receipts and expenditure was considered, and the satisfactory credit balance favourably commented on by members. It was noted that the Finance Committee had authorised the architects .to prepare plans and specifications and to call tenders for the new Winter Show building. When these came to hand the necessary debentures for financing the building would be canvassed for. It was noted that already some hundreds of pounds had been offered, which showed the enthusiasm of members for the project. The Grounds and Buildings Committee reported that a meeting was held at the Tahuna Park motor camp with a committee from the Automobile Association of Otago, and it was agreed that tenders should be called for the suggested additions, and, provided that they did not exceed £3OO, that the work should be proceeded with, each association to pay 50 per cent, of the cost. The horse parade date was set down for September 21, and the Clydesdale Horse Society’s offer of £25 towards the prize money was received with thanks. The appointment of a judge for the parade was held over until next meeting. Snecial prizes for +r> e Summer Show, offered by the Southdown Sheep Society and the New Zealand Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Breeders’ Association, were received with thanks. Representation from the Otago and Southland District Pig Council in. reference to the schedule of classes at the show were fully considered, and the matter was left to the committee in charge of this section to attend to. Mr D ; J. Ireland, in accordance with his_ notice of motion, moved that the society hold its next Summer Show on one day only, and speaking to his motion said that ho considered that it would he in the interests of all com cerned to do so. Modern road transport enabled stock to be brought to the show quickly and economically, provided the_ lorry could get back next day, and this would tend to increase entries and reduce exhibitors’ costs and labour problems. He considered that the society could run a better show on one day than on two days, and submitted that it would be a forward move on the part of the society to do so. It would stimulate interest in the show, which would be reflected in the gate takings.—Considerable discussion followed and an amendment was carried that the matter be held over until next meeting, and in the meantime the secretary, with the assistance of the conveners of the sub-committees, should go fully into the possibility of concentrating the programme into one day with an .evening entertainment. The Secretary reported on the meeting of the Roval Agricultural Society anrl briefly referred to the matters affecting the Otago Society in particular and the Centennial Royal Show to be held in Invercargill in December next.
