COUNCIL'S MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Peninsula County Council was held, yesterday at Portobello. The chairman (Mr J. W. Harbrow) extended a welcome to the new member for Broad Bay Hiding, Mr R. G. Habershon. Other members present included Crs J. J. Nyhon, W. V. Stunner, W. Brookman, D. J. S. Robertson, 1). Rutherford, M. Geary, T. J Edmonds. CORRESPONDENCE. The question of cattle wandering on the roads was again mentioned in a letter from Mr T. Anderson, Port Chalmers. The writer also defined a pre- , ■ vious request regarding boundaries, and asked that It should be attended to. — Received. Mr J. A. Curtis x'equested that the road leading to Mrs M'Kano’s crib be spread with screenings, offering to cart and lay them if they were supplied.— The matter was left to the chairman and Cr Geary, with power to act. The architect for the Education Board (Mr A. B. Welch) drew the attention of the council to the danger of flooding of the grounds of tho Northeast Harbour School and recommended a grating over tho intake of the drain ana the intake kept clear.—lt was decided to draw tho board’s attention to tho fact that tho pipe it had put in was insufficient for the purpose. Mr C. Hedges (Caversham) requested that a fault in the water table in Shannon road, Waverley, should be rectified to keep his section clear of drainage.— It was decided that tho water could only be allpwed to take its natural course. . „ , Mr J. K. King (Anderson s Bay) requested permission to lay 50yds of piping in Victoria road, Waverley.— Granted, subject to the usual conditions. , . , . Mr J, A. I. Scott (Portobello) asked that screenings be spread on the hill portion of Lewis’s road and a broken culvert repaired.—No action to be taken. , . . , Tho town clerk (Dunedin) advised that the council’s request for a pedestrian crossing over Lower High street from Dowling street to the Peninsula motor service stand bad been acceded to. . „ . , The North-east Harbour, Ratepayers Association forwarded a request from two ratepayers that the uncovered ditch which passed down Marion street be piped and filled in.—lt was agreed to do the work if the association provided oil drums for making a culvert. _ Another request from tho association concerned ash removals.—This question opened a number of difficulties, and it was decided to meet delegates from the association if they were willing to airnnge a meeting and have a discussion on tho subject. ...... Tlie Highways Board asked that attention be paid to the repairing of a stone culvert on the road leading to the property of Mr Challis from the mam road.—left in the hands of the member and tho clerk with power to act. Mr E. W. Taylor (Broad Bay) asked for permission to construct an entrance to his property at the corner of Church and District roads.—Granted. Mr R. W. Timms (Macandrew Bay) drew attention to the surface water draining into his property off the District road. —Left in tho hands of the clerk and the member to report. Mrs A. Grigg (Macandrew Bay) requested that the path leading Irani Marlon street to her house bo attended to.—Left in the hands of Cr Brookman. . , . The Hospital Board advised that the amount of the annual levy apportioned to the Peninsula County Council was £1,397 3s 4<L—Received. Mr R. G. Clearwater (Wickliffe Bay) asked that drainage on the road leading to Mr R. G. Neil’s property bo attended to, as water was damaging his ground.—Left to tho member for the riding. , „ , , . . Mr H. Nyhon (Broad Bay) protested about the way the road leading from Hooper’s Inlet had been partially dostrayed and left in a dangerous condition.—The matter was left to Cr Rutherford -< BUILDING PERMITS. Two building permits of a total value of £2.067 were issued for the mouth. WORKS REPORT. The county clerk (Mr J. Seaton) reported as follows on tho work done duruig the past month.— High Road.—The grader has been regularly employed on this road, and further filling work has been carried out on the Highcliff-Dunedin section. Metal has been spread on reconditioned parts. There is a short lengfh of road to be resurfaced, and this work will he done as opportunity offers. Water tables have been cleaned on various parts, and small slips removed. Tomahawk Road. Scarifying has been done on short lengths of this road in Tomahawk township and filling carted. This work has been held up owing to the wet weather, but will bo recommenced at the earliest possible moment. A culvert has been laid to carry surface water near tho Tomahawk bridge. The grader has raked in metal twice during the period. Portobello-Harrington Point Road.— The only work done on this road has been the raking in of metal with the grader. Tho Main Highways Board took over complete control of the road from July 1, and an arrangement lias been made whereby the council’s grader will be hired for maintenance work for approximately one day per week. Main Roads.—Metal from Weipcr’s quarry has been spread on a short length of Portobello-Cape Saunders road in Wickliffe Bay, and the road has been graded. Recent high tides' and heavy winds have caused considerable damage to the sea walls in Hooper’s Inlet, and this requires urgent attention. Culverts have been opened and small slips removed on various parts of the road. Tho Riddell’s-Hooper’s Inlet road has been graded, and attention has been given to culvert mouths

Otago Hoads Riding.—Culverts have been cleared on the Pipikaretu road and on the Taiaroa Heads lighthouse road. A hole in this latter road has been repaired. HighclilT Riding.—Melal from Weiper’s quarry lias been spread on two short lengths of Higbcliff road, and on two corners at the upper end of Wilson’s road. A slip lias been cleared on the Camp road to enable water to be conveyed in the water table, and metal has been spread for a short length on a greasy portion of the road near Mr W T ilman’s property. A small slip on the District road has been cut back and culvert mouths opened. Tomahawk Riding.—Two culverts on Glen street, Tomahawk township, have been lifted and relaid, and filling has been carted to improve the surface ■where it had been damaged by water. A short Gin culvert .has been replaced by a 12in culvert. Work in this riding will he continued as soon as the weather permits. North-east Harbour. - Screenings have been spread on Reach street. forming Kenilworth street is nearing completion, and metal has been quarried in readiness for carting to this work. Attention has been given to various footpaths at Macandrew Bay, and a Gin culvert has been laid on Royal Terrace to enable a deep water table to bo rendered less dangerous. Further progress has been made with the felling of trees on Marine Parade, and this work is nearing completion. Broad Bay Riding,—Quarry bottom and screenings have been spread at the junction of Roebuck Rise and the Beach road, in Broad Bay township. The footpaths in Portobello township have been coated with quarry dust from Weiper’s quarry, and metal has been spread to render the surface of Christie street, Scatoun township, safe for traffic. Metal has been spread practically throughout the whole length of Clyde Terrace, Helensburgh township. Portobello Riding.—Filling has been carried out and potholes filled in Wiekliffe Bay. Water tables have also been cleaned in this locality, and a culvert extended. Small slips have been removed on Weir’s line, and attention has been given to culvert mouths. A damaged culvert on Lewis’s road has been repaired.
