BOXING
FOSTER BEATS DAVIS [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, May 18. Showing speed and science of a high order, Johnny Foster, the ex-Canadian, proved too clever for Jack Davis, of Hastings, in a professional contest scheduled for 12 rounds at the Wellington Town Hall to-night. Foster was a different man from the sluggish boxer who was outpointed by Vic Caltaux in the same hall a fortnight ago. Trained to the minute, he did the leading throughout, and, using his feet cleverly, played a tattoo on Davis’s face with his straight left, which he used like a rapier. Foster had the advantage in weight and reach, and the Hastings lad had difficulty in getting to close quarters. A solid right put Davis down for eight in the fifth round, and a left hook had him down again for eight in the seventh. As the contest progressed Foster’s superiority became more pronounced, and he had Davis at his mercy in the tenth and eleventh rounds. Davis was sent down for nine in the tenth and was down again for nine in the eleventh, and the referee, to save a plucky lad from unnecessary punishment, lifted Foster’s arm. The Canadian proved himself a clever boxer, showing speed. pace, and science, and using both hands to good effect.
