SOUTH CANTERBURY RACES

MUHGATOOH'S SURPRISE WIN PANDINE'S FAST TIME IK STEEPLES FIVE FAVOURITES SUCCESSFUL The weather was fine but very cold f*r the opening day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s Winter Meeting, and the, attendance disappointing, llio track was very firm and fast, and the racing interesting. . Mungatoon effected a surprise in the principal handicap, as he had hitherto ihown his best form on yielding tracks, •nd returned his backers a good doublefigure price on the straight-out machine. Passaform was badly interfered with by, Petersham, otherwise he would ■ have beaten the winner. This interference cost W. Connor, the rider of Petershftm, a month's suspension. Pandine gave a brilliant, exhibition of jumping and fast galloping in the steeplechase, and scored easily in very fast time. ' Rose man, racing in Dr Arthur Reid s colours for the first time, was unlucky in the Seadown Handicap, as he lost three or four lengths at the start, and was only beaten a length by Nightcalm. Triple Cone was also unlucky at the •tart of his race, and made up lost ground so well that he must be considered in his next start. ... Survey outiumped the opposition in the hurdles, and on his ( performance Trill come into favour for bis Auckland engagement next week. ■ Pink Robe ran a.fair race, but had no chance with the winner. Travenna was not fav-. cured by the hard going, but returned a nice price for third for continuing in the hurdle race after running off at the first hurdle. , . Foxlove was always well placed in the Elloughton Handicap, and in a last-i-uh race finished very gamely into third place. . , , , Backers of first favourites had a good run, five being returned winners, but all of them were at a short price. , The totalisator handled £IO,BOB 10s, a decrease of £32 10s as compared with, last year. NOTES ON THE MEETING [By St. Ci.air.] Survey (316-230), Pink Robe (228220), Metal Bird (59-105), and Pladie (36-100) were the best backed in the Levels Hurdles. Pride o’ Central refused to line up at the barrier, and took no part in the race. At the first hurdle Metal Bird ran off and took Game Huntef with him. Pladte led Pink Robe and Survey to the third hurdle, then the last-named ran to the front. At the far turn Pink Robe moved into second place, but had no chance of catching Survey, who gave an exhibition of splendid jumping and beat Pink Robe by eight lengths, Travenna was 25 lengths away third, two lengths to Pladie and Colonel Trench. Badkers of the first two horses on the place machine received a very poor return.

Phenomenal (401-270), Triple Cone (194-248), Real Lady (85-187)., Treasurer (85-132), Lady Sincere (56-103), and Lord Puck (44-77) were the best backed for the Claremont Hack Handicap. Triple Cone was badly left, and Don Roy, Astral Flash, and Pen-full were slow to begin. Countervane was first to show out from Nolana and Real Lady, but when a furlong had been covered the favourite ran to the front, and racing across the top was nearly six lengths clear from Lady Kinnoull, On Call, and Chief Lama. Phenomenal was still well clear turning for home, with On Call, Chief Lama, Flame Queen, Real Lady, Lady Sincere, and Treasurer racing in close order next. At the distance On Call made a good challenge, but failed to reach Phenomenal by a length. Chief Lama was two lengths away third, a length in front of Heal Ladyj then Lady Sincere and Treasurer. Phenomenal was stopping at the finish, and On Call’s effort w-as his best for some months.

Kansas City (275-299), Tiny Axworthy (186-197), Wexford (165-149), Marie’s Pride (159-156), Diviner (146121), and Ceres (145-145) were the best backed in the Opihi Harness Trot. Wexford was the smartest of the front liners to begin, but at the end of a furlong Ceres, Kansas City, Waikitea, and Rey Bonny had run to the front. Rey Bonny led Kansas City, Ceres, and Tiny Axworthy along the hack, and there was no change until after the far turn had been made. Approaching the home turn Rey Bonny was challenged by Kansas City and Erin’s Lad, w-ith Alandrall and Marie’s Pride next. Once in the straight Rey Bonny drew away again and won comfortably by three lengths from Erin’s Lad, who beat Alarie’s Pride by a length. Both Alandrell-and Kansas City would have finished in the money but they broke 60yds from the post. Aurie’s Star, Kansas City, and Diviner were next. The winnef returned a big dividend.

Night Hawk (338-292), Foxlove (337-314). Passaform (181-179), Nightdress (137-210), Rabble (129-195), and Mungatoon (82-138) were the best favoured m the Elloughton Handicap. All got’ away well, and Night Hawk led Passaform and Alungatoon through the Straight, and as they turned to the back stretch Night Hawk was showing the way to Muijeatoon _ and Foxlove. At the end of half a mile Alungatoon ran up to Night Hawk, and they drew out three lengths 'clear from Foxlove, with Petersham, Rabble, Milford, and Passaform next. Mungatoon led Night Hawk racing across the top, and was two lengths clear _ from Night Hawk entering the straight, with Foxlove, Petersham, Rabble, and Passaform next. Night Hawk was done with at the top or the straight; and Foxlove was the first to challenge Mungatoon, but the latter drew away to win by two lengths from Passaform, who beat Foxlove a length. Petersham was two lengths away fourth, then Rabble, Nightdress, Queen of Song, Balmenter, and Night Hawk.

In a field of six Pandine (293-200), Wexford Bridge (235-173), and Corban (212-202) were the best fancied for the Craigraore Hack Steeplechase. Pandine and Sunny Comet quickly drew out nearly a dozen lengths from Wexford Bridge and Corban, and they jumped two fences together. Then Pandine took charge .and, jumping very quickly and cleanly, led all the way. He was eased up after jumping the last fence and won by a length from Chile, who beat Wexford Bridge by three lengths. Sunny Comet was half a length away fourth, and Corban, who stopped badly over the last two furlongs, was a poor fifth. Wardress (603-323), Disband (275287), Elegy (214-277), Gironde (92-168), and Dr Duthie (88-166) were the best backed in the Kingsdown Hack Handicap. Elmarch and Fireguard were badly left and Garonne led out from Wardress and Bright Prospect, and racing along the back was three lengths clear from Disband and Wardress with Gironde and Alerry Simon next. There was no change in this order until approaching the homo turn where Garonne was about a length and a-half in front of Wardress, Disband, and Gironde, with Alerry Simon next. At the distance the favourite drew clear and scored the easiest win of the day by two lengths from Gironde, who beat Dr Duthie a head. Disband, Alerry Simon, and Wagner were next.

In the Beaconsfield Harness Trot Handicap Pursuit (369-305), Siege Gun (725-253), Great Don (146-184), Labour Day (124-172), and Marfax (121-149) were the best backed. Seigo Gun failed to go away and Idlealong led through the straight from Alarfax, Pursuit. Charles Russell, Lady Nessa, and Rollalong. At the end of" five furlongs Rollalong ran to the front and showed the way to Idlealong and Pursuit. racing together, and Lady Nessa at the head of the others. This order was maintained to the approach to the home turn where Rollalong retired and Idlealong and Pursuit were left in charge from Great Don, Ned Worthy, and Lady Nessa. Great Don took charge at the distance and won by a length from Lady Nessa, who did not get an uninterrupted run down the straight. Pursuit was three lengths in front of Alacgregor, with Ned Worthy and Becky Direct next. In a four-horse field for the Readown Handicap Nightcalm was backed down to an odds-on price'. He got the

best and Roseman the worst of a bad start. Roseman ran up on the outside of Nightcalm and thcv ran round the far turn and across the top two lengths clear from the other pair. Roseman, on the outside, was a neck in front of Nightcalm turning for homo but the favourite was in charge at the distance and, hard ridden, beat Roseman by a length. Silver Streak was half a length away third, a neck in front of Silver Slipper,
