NORTH OTAGO NOTES

[From Ode Oasiaed Correspondent.] HOSPITAL LOAN. At a special meeting yesterday the Waitaki Hospital Board decided to apply to the Local Bodies Loans Board for authority to raise a loan of £BO,OOO for hospital extensions. In moving that this bo done the chairman (Mr W. Forrester) said a good deal of fault-finding had been directed against the board for not sooner taking the public into its confidence, but the public were fully informed as to the board’s proposals on February 16, 1938. _ln view of the urgent necessity for immediate action the board had no alternative but to proceed with its application. Petitions, signed by 470 residents of the Waitaki County, were received, protesting against the loan. WAITAKI POWER BOARD. At the monthly meeting of the Waitaki Power Board yesterday the secretary (Mr C. F. Jones) reported that sales of electricity in December totalled £5,039, as against £4,619 in December, 1937. The sales for the quarter were £9BB higher than those for the December quarter of 1937, and the increase for nine months was £3.549. The engineer (Mr I. Dalmer) reported that during December 18 new consumers were connected, 13 ranges, 18 water heaters, and 11 motors were installed, and 85 extensions and 65 transfers were attended to. The hightension- extension at Tussocky road was almost completed, and another at Peebles was being completed. Further extensions and services had been added at Kakanui, Maheno, Weston, Teaneraki, Enfield, Otiake, and Kurow. A big extension was being arranged for south of Kakanui. The total load on the system last inonth was 2,500 k.v.a., and 1,009,527 units were used. The board decided to apply for permission to raise the remaining £15,000 of the 1937 extension loan. MAGISTRATE’S COURT. The weekly sitting of the Oamaru Magistrate’s Court was held yesterday, before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.

Robert Davison Campbell was fined 10s and costs (12s) for driving without a warrant of fitness, and costs (12s) for driving a truck with insufficient lights. Alexander M'Donald was fined 10s and costs (£1 11s) for driving without a warrant of fitness, and was convicted and discharged for not having a driver’s license. Allen M'Namara was fined 10s and costs (10s) for failing to give way at a pedestrian crossing. For driving without a driver’s license, George Vanhorn Bound was fined 3s and costs (12s). and Leonard Hastie was fined 5s and costs (10s). For driving, without a warrant of fitness, R. Donaldson was fined 10s and costs (10s), and Philip C. Skelton was convicted and discharged. EARLY SETTLERS. There were about 70 early settlers of North Otago at the inaugural meeting held to form the North Otago Early Settlers’ Association. The following officers were elected :—Patrons. Colonel J. C. Nichols, Messrs W. Milne and W. Smyth; president, Mr G. L. Grenfell ; vice-presidents, Messrs R. Milligan and J. IR. Sewell: treasurer, Mr G. M. Gardiner; committee—Mesdames M. Markland and J. Nicholls. Messrs .1. Hartley, J. Herron, A. M'Tnnes, J. Rutherford, and Allan; canvassers, Messrs G. Sumpter and F. Simkin. Those eligible for membership are persons who have resided in North Otago for 50 years or more, or who have attained the age of 70 years. JOCKEY CLUB. At a meeting of the Oamaru Jockey Club yesterday the Programme Committee was instructed to make either the Windsor Hack Handicap or the Parkside Handicap, at the autumn meeting, an apprentices’ race. It was decided 7 to make a contribution to the Community Week funds, and Mr J. H. Main was appointed delegate to the Community Week Committee. COMMUNITY WEEK. At a meeting of the Sports Committee for the Community Week Queen Carnival the following officers were elected;—Chairman, Mr S. G. M'Dougall; secretary, Mr E .W. Kerr; treasurer, Mr W. Purvey. Messrs G. Knowles and Martyn and Miss D. Miller were appointed a subcommittee. At a meeting of the South End Committee it was decided to ask the executive to obtain permission for an art union, and arrangements were made for a community sing. LAWN TENNIS. In the Southern Lawn Tennis Association’s competition Weston beat Enfield by 12 sets to 4, the singles (Weston names first) resulting-.—Mrs Halkett beat Miss Diver 7-2, Mrs Laney lost to Miss M'Naughton 3-7, Miss Falloon beat Miss Yuill 7-4, Mrs Brown lost to Miss Perniskie 5-7, L. Campbell beat D. Hamilton 9-4, J. Sim beat D. Elliott 9-2, B. Halkett beat J. Wood 9-3, 0. Laney beat F. Diver 9-2. STAFF PICNIC. The annual staff picnic of the Waitaki County Council was held at Glencoe. The chairman (Mr J Rodman) made a presentation" of a case of pipes and a tobacco pouch to Mr-J. Reid (Herbert), who recently retired, after a long period of service. CRICKET. The annual cricket match between the Australian and New Zealand slaughtermen of the Pukeuri Freezing Works, was won by the New Zealanders by 5 runs. New Zealand scored 167 (J. Patterson 21, M. Davis 22. K. Stewart 21), and Australia scored 157 (T. Goldsworthy 19, A. Twaddle 33, N. Gibbs 37). For New Zealand, J. Harney took most of the wickets.
