SURF LIFE-SAVING

ST. GLAIR CLUB TRIALS Prospective members for the New Zealand championship teams of the St. Clair Surf Life Saving Chib recently journeyed to itauone Beach, where a series of trials was held under conditions which will be similar to those encountered at Milford Beach, in Auckland, next February. In the junior trials the following registered best times;—Beltman C. J. Lawrence 1, I, Wilson 2, A. Deuchrass 3. ' The junior surf race resulted in a narrow win for I. Wilson from Lawrence and Deuchrass. Most of the juniors, however, are too lackadaisical in their movements on land, and if a big improvement is not shown the team may not journey north for the championships. The decision lies with the members themselves, however, and if they smarten their work considerably the trip may eventuate. The senior trials resulted: Belt L. B. Toase 1, H. R. Callender 2, H. D. Gillies 3. The surf race, which was held over a course of approximately a quarter of a mile, resulted in another win for the speedy Toase from Gillies, Elliott, and K. Decide. Members of this team could also smarten up movements on land, ns their work in this direction is not so precise as that of last year’s winnina team. The whole dav was most enjoyable, and thanks are due to .1. Cranston, W. Hudson, and J. Swan, who conveyed

the party to Harrington Point, and also to residents who assisted in placing the buoy.
