Centre Chat. At the monthly meeting of the Dunedin Centre held last- Saturday much important business was discussed. An item of interest was iu connection with bowl testing and the stamping of bowls, and it was made clear that the centre’s official tester is quite within liis rights in deciding to stamp any bowls whcli do not conform with the laws of the game in,regard to the proper markings which should be engraved on the discs, and bowlers should remember that these markings on the discs should be permanently engraved. Bowls with an older test date stamp than 1932 are not iu order. Players should remember that the 1932 stamp will be out of date after the end of this playing season.

The President of the centre made reference to the deaths of Air P. Boulton. of the North-east Valley Club, and of Air W. O. Smellie, of the Green Island Club, both of whom had been valued members. The centre’s Visits Committee— Messrs A. Cook (convener) and A. Newall—is busy making arrangements for members of the executive to play games with clubs iu the outlying districts, and I understand that visits will bo made to Fairfield and Brighton at early dates, probably December 1 and S. This is a wise move /on the centre's part, as our country .copsins do not get the same opportunity for play as the city club members. Conditions for the Christmas pairs, to be played in Dunedin, were completed. Play will commence on Alonday, December 26, and it is hoped tbai the tourney will conclude the following day. The question of starting play on December 24 was discussed, but it was thought best to leave the local greens open to members for social play on that day. The writer feels sure this decision will be appreciated by the great majority of players in this district as well as by visitors. Entries for the Christmas pairs elo.se with the secretary of the centre, Air R. Hanning, on Wednesday, December 14.

Owing to a misunderstanding caused by the weather the first series of games was not completed in the Wednesday competition, and it was decided that games not played that day will be played at the end of the season if necessary.

A delegate at the meeting made reference to the fact that there is at least one player taking part in the important matches who does not conform with the laws governing play from the mat. There are still a few players who almost deliberately take up a position on the mat with parr of a foot or feet over the white line, and consequently ou making their delivery “ dig ” their toes into the turf. This is a state of affairs which should not be tolerated, and it is up to officials of all clubs to see that a stop is put to the practice. Greens are difficult enough to get in good order without the class of players mentioned doing what might be classed as wilful damage.

Satisfaction was expressed at . the way some of the clubs liave set about getting bowls used by their members properly engraved and stamped, special mention being made of the St. Kilda, Dunedin, and Balmaeewen Clubs. In the clubs mentioned club captains or the club tie committees have been responsible for the good work.

Notes During the absence of Mr K. Hanning, secretary of the Dunedin Centre, on an extended holiday, bis place was filled by bis son. Mr J. D. Hanning, who conducted the affairs of the centre in a very able manner, and a minute was recorded expressing the thanks of the executive. The President also welcomed Mr 11. Hanning back to the centre meeting. Bowlers in this part of the Dominion will regret to learn that Mr Ceorge Gladding, the secretary this year for the New Zealand Bowling Council, has been confined to bis home through illness and has not been able to give full attention to the work of the council, Jt is hoped that at an early date he will be back in harness Good progress is being made with the work of laying a second green at the Woodhaugh Gardens for the Leith Chib. It is pleasing to know that the foundation of the new' green will bo more substantial than the first one. Saturday Shield Matches. The third round was completed last Saturday under conditions that were very trying owing to the high wind prevailing right through the period of play. Of course, some of tho greens

were more sheltered than others, but In the majority of eases conditions were really unpleasant, and settled play was out of the question. Fairfield, by collecting again the full 12 points, is well in the lead for the shield, but a loss or two to a onc-sec-tion club soon makes its presence felt. Fight clubs, each with 2-1 points, are iu second place. Brighton' and the young I’ortobollo Club have still to place a figure on the ladder. The Outram Club did not fulfil its engagement on Saturday owing to the Taieri Show being held that day. This fixture will be played later. Port Chalmers got the full quota of points, and this places it in second place, with eight others. Result of Saturday matches: —

*Taiuni—l win by default against Green Island. Outran! v. Kaituna — Not played (Taieri Show day).

A score card of a recent, chib tie link game has been handed to the writer. Howard (Otago) won the game, which was one of 15 heads. All the points were scored by Howard’s rink, as follows;—2, 3,7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, Hi, 18, 19, 21, 23. 26, 27, to its opponent’s nil. Scores of this .description arc not met with every day, hut arc not uncommon. Some years back in a provincial tourney the writer was on the winning side, and the score after 18 heads, when its opponents threw in the sponge, was 27-nil. The writer also witnessed a singles game played in a Dominion tourney where the final .score was 27-nil. it will be noticed that in the games mentioned 27 was prominent Central Otago Notes. Last week a Naiychy rink, consisting of A. Cain, W. Anderson. S. Holt, and W. Behrens (s.), played a challenge match for the Diggers Chip, but sntlered defeat by 22-18. The next match will be Alexander (holders) against Middlemarch. The Cromwell rink, Mitchell, Jelly.
