SUMMER SHOW

People's Day at Tahuna Park

Carnival Spirit Commences The wisdom of postponing last night’s carnival at the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s Summer Show was home out by perfect weather conditions to-day at Tahuna Park. Early the public commenced to visit the ground, considerable interest being displayed in the judging of the horses, both working and hack types, crowds lining the rails to witness the equine beauties do their paces.

With, weather conditions settled, the stage is now set for a fine - evening’s entertainment, and visitors from both town and country can be assured pi th® fun and merriment possible. With the additional time at their disposal to comfortably “settle in,” side-show men have erected their tents and stalls in convenient positions round the grounds,'and the vocal pleasantries so intimately, associated with showmen adds a further touch to the undoubted carnival spirit prevailing. To-night, too, visitors can be assured of first-rate entertainment. Practically all the programme scheduled for last night, but which was postponed because of the unfavourable weather conditions, will be included in to-night’s events, so the evening will be a very full one indeed. Indications at the moment are for a record attendance.

WORKING DRAUGHTS. Judge: Mr T. Carruthers (Middlemarch) . As in the breeding draught horse section the competition was very poor, and the judge, Mr T. Carruthers, of Middlemarch, had little comment to make on the classes paraded before him. He considered Mr W. Anderson’s Star, winner, without opposition, in the town carriers’ class, the best horse forward, and also made complimentary reference to the Express Company Ltd.’s winner in the class for express horses up to lOcwt. In a section of 13 classes no horses wereforward in the spring-van horses up to 20cwt, pair of town carrier’s horses, tradesman’s turnout or dairyman’s turnout classes. The breeding draught horse section n-as one of the poorest displays of its kind ever seen at this show, and was made all the poorer by the non-appear-ance of all Mr Andrew Grant’s, of Fairlie, ■ entries. In commenting on the classes ho had to judge, Mr D. Caldwell, of Edendale, said that the female classes showed the better quality. Though lacking in numbers, the quality of most of the winning exhibits was good. The champion mare was quite an outstanding Clydesdale, true to type, sweet-boned, and true in action. , ...... Verdlea Moonlight, who was third at the Dunedin stallion parade and first and champion at the Taieri Show last Saturday, scored easily in the aged stallion ■ class, and also secured the champion ribbon. The championship in the female classes was awarded to Ochtertyre Alonette, who was first in the dry mares’ class and also first in a similar class at the Taieri Show. The Clydesdale Horse Society of New Zealand’s medal for the best yearling or two-year-old colt or filly was awarded to Messrs M'Rae Bros.’ yearling filly Heather Lea Princess, winner in her class, with Mr Andrew Young’s two-year-old filly second and Mr A. Wilson’s yearling colt third. Referring to the winner, the judge described her as an exceptionally good type of Clydesdale, likely to develop into a line mare. This was this-filly’s first appearance in the show ring. In the classes for three-year-old colts, mare and two progeny, best group of four fillies, and best group of four there vvere no entries forward.

HARNESS AND HACKS. Judge: Mr 11, J. Murphy (Fairlie). In the hack and harness fields, which were unusually large, there were some very fine animals, the judge remarking that it has been many years since such fine fields had been seen in any show ring. The various rings were well filled and there was outstanding quality in all of them. The tops were well up to standard, the judging being by no means an easy, task. 1 Horse, Mare, or Gelding, not over 15.2, most suitable ’ for mounted rifle cohps—Mr H. 11.
