EDUCATION IN OTAGO

BOARD'S MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of tbo Otago Education Board was held this morning, Mr James Wallace presiding. There were present Messrs C. E. Richards, D. C. Cameron, N. Colquhoun, E. -Morgan, W. D. Sutherland, W. R. Brugh, D. Marshall, and W. M. Cooper. ' RESIGNATIONS. The following resignations were accepted:—Head master, Charles W. Kibblewhite, Ravensbourrie; sole teacher, Leith V. Sheppard, Kokonga; solo, teacher, Julie D. Fleet, Mount Stuart; assistant, Katharine R. Carpenter, George Street; assistant, Eva M. M'Lintock, Waitahuna; assistant lecturer in arts and crafts, Phyllis G. Butler, Training College. APPOINTMENTS. 1 The following appointments were confirmed: —Head master, Charles W. Kibblewhite, Tapanui D.H.; _ assistant, Arthur J. H. Shaw, Tokomairiro D.H.; assistant, Marie E. Robinson, Allanton; assistant, Irene E. Hawkes, Dunback; assistant, Dorothy Carson, Flag Swamp; assistant, Emma P. M'Laren, Momona; assistant, Rhoda I. Newton, Ranfurly; assistant, Muriel R. Dowling, Tahakopa; assistant. Ruby Smyth, Teaneraki. CONCRETE WORKS. Tho architect’s reports on various concrete works to be undertaken, under the Public Works scheme were considered. He reported that to lay down in concrete the area at present in asphalt at the Brighton School would cost £3lO. —Referred back to tho Public Works Department. Tho Waikouaiti School Committee applied for an additional area in concrete over and above the £34 already approved. The Architect reported that the 450 square yards asked for would cost £l7O. —Referred to the Education Department. The Tainui School Committee applied for replacement of asphalt with concrete and an additional area in concrete. Tho Architect reported that to resurface .the present area with concrete would cost £356 ss, while the additional ai‘ea w.onld cost £177 16s. To top-dress the present asphalt would cost £SO. —It was decided to pay half cost of the top-dress-ing, and to refer the new work, which was approved of by tho hoard, to the Public Works Department. REPAIRS AND RENOVATIONS. Tho Portohello School Committee wrote stating that drain pipes were necessary to improve drainage at the school. The Architect reported that the cost would be about £7.—Agreed. The Tainui School Committee applied for a new road boundary fence. The Architect reported that a new fence was necessary along the new road frontage. Tho estimated cost was £7s.—Agreed to apply to Education Department foxcost. The Head Teacher of tho St. Leonards School applied for a fence in front of his residence, as it was necessary to remove the front hedge, which had outgrown its usefulness. The architect estimated the'new fence and gate to cost £l7.—Held over until Mr Sutherland could furnish a report. The Head Teacher _of the _ Upper Junction School applied fox- installation of hot water service, also interior renovation.—The Architect reported that the hot water service would entail replacement of present range with a high-pressure range, also the erection of an additional tank, cost £47; two rooms and bathroom should ho renovated at a cost of £ls; a new basin was also necessary, cost £6; total, £6B. —Held over pending an inspection by town members. The Seacliff School Committee wrote asking for the installation of a septic tank. —Agreed. ADVICE FROM DEPARTMENT. The department, in reply to the hoard’s application for a- grant for tho cost of fitting up the gymnasium as an assembly hall at tho Tokomairiro District High School and for the erection of a new fuel and tool shed, stated that further consideration to this request would be given when other works regarded as of greater urgency had been dealt with.—Noted. The department intimated that tho Public Works Department had been asked l to x-eport on tho clearing of the strip of land which had been purchased, together with erection of concrete retaining wall, at the George Street School.—Held over. SWIMMING IN SCHOOLS. The New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association forwarded a copy of its educational report for the past season. Certificates for swimming were issued to 32,002 school children, which was more than double the previous New Zealand record. The Otago total was 3,015. The association expressed appreciation of the active co-operation of the education boards.—“ The_ Otago total is very satisfactory,” said Mr Cameron.

The Balclutha Amateur Swimming Club wrote asking for a contribution towards the cost of swimming tuition to school children.—lt was decided to give £3 3s, NAMES ON SCHOOL BUILDINGS. The Architect reported that tho use of stencils for the purpose of painting names of the schools on the buildings would be much cheaper than signwriting on boards ns iprcviously suggested. —On Mr Camcronls motion it was decided to instruct the architect to paint tho names on schools when painting work was in progress. OPOHO SCHOOL. A petition was received from parents of children attending the Opoho School that the Side School be made available to children up to Standard IV. It was stated that the steepness of the hill was detrimental to the health of less robust children.—The matter was referred to the George- Street and Northeast Valley School Committees. OPENING DAY OF SCHOOL TERMS. A letter received from the Education Department stated that representations had been made by the New Zealand Educational Institute that the opening day of tho term for all primary schools bo Tuesday. Tho board’s comments were asked for. “ They have already had our opinion,” said Mr Wallace. “We are always in favour of resuming on a Tuesday.” It was decided to advise the department accordingly. FINANCIAL. Accounts amounting to £30,-107 13s Id were passed for payment.
