PLUNKET SOCIETY
ANNUAL REPORT PRESENTED ELECTION OF OFFICERS The Royal New Zealand Society for the Health of Women- and Children (Pluniket Society), Dunedin branch, held its annual meeting in the City Council Chambers yesterday afternoon, the mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) acting as chairman at the request of Mrs Joseph M’George, the president of the society. Moving the adoption of the annual report, the Chairman said this document clearly shovyed the valuable work the society was doing for the community, not only in Dunedin, but in all parts of the country. Mr Allen traversed the various aspects of the report. The activities of the society were not confined to New Zealand alone, he said, but had spread to Britain, Ceylon, the Indies, and other countries.' So largely had the work of the society spread and.so well known was the name of the founder, of .the movement (Sir Trnby King), that when in Germany some years ago he had heard the latter referred to, A feature of the work of the society was the training of nurses. There wen* two classes of nurses—Pluriket nurses and Karitane nurses. The latter were trained in other centres of the Dominion, but Plimket nurses were trained only in Dunedin.
Everyone was proud of the organisation that had its origin in Dunedin, said the Chairman. Many backward and retarded children had been helped back to health by the society. The Chairman also referred to the balance sheet as contained in the annual report, which showed that, while there was a big expenditure of £5.301, the society had finished the year with a small surplus. The new Truhy King-Harris Hospital at Anderson’s Bay now under course of construction, said the Chairman, would cost £20.000 when furnished. Of this sum £16,000 was in hand, and he trusted it would not bo long before the full amount was subscribed. Mr Ja mes Hogg, a member of the Advisory Committee of the society, expressed pleasure in seconding theadoption of the report. He then went on in eulogise the work that had been founded so* ably by Sir Truby King. He could not pass over the report without congratulating Mrs APGeorge, the .society’s president, and her executive on the wonderful worik they had been carrying out. , He also wished to take the opportunity, on behalf of the society, to thank all the many donors to the new building fund. The speaker referred to the initial building donated by the founder at Karitane. the growth and progress of the society’s work til' Air Wolf Harris donated the building at Anderson’s Bay 2R years ago. The further growth and work of the societv. he said, now demanded a bigger building. and one was under construction on the site of that given by Air Harris The report was adopted.
