COUNCIL'S MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Peninsula County Council yesterday at Portobdllo was attended by Crs J. Cross (chairman), J. J. Nyhon. T. S. Edmonds. D. Rutherford,. W. V, Stunner, J. T. Irvine, D. J. S. (Robertson. J. W. Harbrow, and W. (Brooknqan. DRAINAGE AT MACANDREW BAY. As the outcome of a conference among the engineer of the Otago Harbour Board, representatives of the council, and the medical officer of health (Ur T. M'Kibbin), the medical officer placed before the council a suggested course of action to obtain watercarriage drainage for the residences ill the. more closely populated areas at Macandrew Bay. The suggestions were to the effect that a sub-committee of the council bo formed to hold a meeting of the ratepayers of the district advocating the urgent need for the council seeking the powers of a borough council in respect of this area, so as to facilitate the scheme for carrying the drainage into the harbour from this district. Dr M‘Kibbin also proposed that the ratepayers be asked io sign a petition to the council to separately rate this district for drainage purposes. Cr Brockman said that the Harbour Board’s engineer did not support this scheme unless it embraced the entire district, excluding faym properties. There is to be a meeting of ratepayers of- the district, and the scheme will be placed before them by Dr M'Kibbiu. CORRESPONDENCE. Owing to, the occasional journeys made by corporation buses within the county, the Town Clerk, Dunedin, asked the permission of the council for operating this service at odd periods, in conformity with a provision in the Muhcipal Corporations Act.—Granted. Provided the county engineer supervised the work, Mr J. J. Webster (Macandrew Bay) was granted permission to form a carriageway from the street leading to a garage he proposed to build. A similar application respecting a property at Vauxhall was granted Mr S. Dyer. Because of the proposed reconstruction of the road, the request of Mr D. Ellison (Otakou) for the formation of a culvert was refused. Since a plan showed .that the building did not interfere with visibility from the road, Mr AI. Morris was given permission to erect a boat shed at the Cove. A similar application affecting the conversion of the old waiting shed at Broad Bay wharf into a boat shed was granted Mr E. R. Kane. The council renewed the tender of Disabled Soldiers' Products for the supply for 1939 of 460 dog collars, at a cost of £ls 3s 3d. A request to the council to define the road boundaries adjoining a syndicate’s property and also his leasehold area at Granton Township, was received from Mr T. Anderson (Port Chalmers). He made an application for the reconstruction of a culvert fronting his property. —The letter, which also contained several other requests, was received. Pointing nut that now that Black street was bring regraded the whole of the channel water would flow on to his property, Hr J. O. Thomson (Vauxhall) wrote asking the council to arrange for an inspection of his section, as it had been considerably damaged because of drainage water from other roads flooding it.—Tin* engineer and the councillor representing the riding are tq submit a reputt to the council.
Support was given by the council to a suggestion received from the Minister of Transport that there be a system introduced for the probationary licensing of drivers of motor cars when this was considered necessary by a local authority. This proposed regulation would involve learners, and to their vehicles would be attached an “L” sign, denoting that they were inexperienced. The council endorsed the scheme.
Objection was taken by Mr J. P. Vivian (Macandrew Bay) to the action of the council in excessively excavating the corner in front of his property at Macandrew Bay. He pointed out that the appearance of his property had been spoilt.—The council held that the work in no way disfigured his property, the letter being received. As new piles were needed ’under the club’s shed, the North-east Harbour Boating Club asked for permission to fell b’uegum trees facing the Marine Parade at Macandrew Bay.—The request was declined. Details of proposed works to be carried out by the County. Council in the Waverley district, in so far as they affected the City Council’s watermains, were asked for by the town clerk, Dunedin.—Received. RANGER’S REPORT. The county ranger (Mr E. Campbell) reported ‘ that he had impounded five cattle found wandering at Portohollo during the past month. He also reported there were 23 owners of unregistered dogs in the county. ENGINEER’S REPORT. Works carried out in the county during the past month were reported on as follows by the county engineer (Mr S. G. Paterson) : Otago Heads Riding.—The metalling on the Cape Saunders road, near the lighthouse, had been raked in and broken over to gauge. Povtobello Riding..—The contracts for the widening of Kinnaird road and the retaining wall on the same road were practically completed. Further work had been done on the flood damage repair contract on the Portobello-Capo Saunders road. AVatertables were cleaned in Leith Walk. A small portion of the Portobello-Otakou road in the Portobello township had been widened and metalled. Samß-mount Riding.—The re-forma-tion of the lower end of the RiddcllsHooper’s Inlet road had been completed. Watertables were cleaned on the upper portion. Highcliff Riding.—Surfacing had been done on Paradise road. A culvert which fell in on Craigie’s road had been repaired. Tomahawk Riding.—Watertables had been cleaned on "the Main road and lupines cut. Maintenance work was done on the Valley road. North-east Harbour Riding.—The formation of Scott street was nearing completion. The formation of Beach street was progressing well, the gullet of the cutting being within a chain of cutting through. The wi'c'ing of Shandon road was in hand, and the widening of Abbotsford road was approaching Hardy’s corner. At Macandrew Bay the widening of the coiner of District road was completed, and the new formation metalled. The formation of the Colinswood end of Marine Parade was well in hand.
Broad Bay Riding.—ln Helensburgh township the formation of Clyde Terrace to connect with Colquhoun street was nearing completion. T.enty-five cubic yards of metal had been quarried and hand broken for metalling the new road formation. The footpath in Bay View road. Broad Bay, was being coated with fine waste material from the highway. The report was adopted.
