TAKADA. The old British-India Line steamer Takada, which was employed for about 20 years in the company’s passenger trade between Bombay and, Chinese and Japanese ports, has been sold to a Belgian shiphreaking firm for about £12,500. The Takada was withdrawn from the passenger run in 1936 and laid up at Bombay, pending her sale, but about a year later conditions improved to such an extent that the ship was recommissioned as a cargo carrier, and as such visited Australia last October with a cargo of linseed. The Takada, a twin screw steamer of 6,949 tons gross register, is a sister ship to the Tanda, which is still employed in the associated Eastern and Australian Line passenger service between Melbourne and the Far East. As a passenger ship she carried 50 first class and 52 second class passengers, with a crew of 157. Both ships wore built by Alexander Stephen and Sons, of Glasgow, in 1914, the Tanda being transferred to tho E. and A. Line soon after launching. During tho war both ships were converted to hospital ships. Tho Tanda was chartered by the residents of Madras and handed over to the Indian Government, carrying the name Madras while in this service. The Takada was employed bringing back wounded troops from Mesopotamia to Bombay, and made occasional visits to South Africa for tho same purpose. She has been displaced from tho British-India Line fleet by the commissioning of the company’s new passenger ship Arara and the freighters Itincla, Indora, and Orna. Tho itinda and Indora, which are sister ships, using triple expansion, steam engines exhausting into Bauer Wach turbines, were built by William Grey and Co., of West Hartlepool. The Orna, built and engine-! by Barclay, Curie, and Co., of Glasgow, is of almost the same dimensions as the two steamers, except that she is nearly 23ft shorter, due possibly to the saving of the stokehold space. She uses a four-cylinder Diesel engine of the Doxford opposed piston type. The Amra, a twin screw turbine steamer of abt ut 8,700 tons gross, has accommodation for 13 saloon and about 2,000 Indian deck passengers. IN RADIO RANGE.
