AT WINGATUI THIS MORNING A shower overnight freshened up the tracks at Wingatui without making them any slower, and both the plough and centre of the course proper were available for fast work, which was carried out under ideal conditions this morning. Gold Don ran seven furlongs on the plough in Imin 40 3-ssec, easing up over the latter part of tho journey. On the same track Janet' Gay nor was going slightly better than Roseman at the end of six furlongs in Imin 19sec, the first three in 38sec. _ Attractive'Note finished just in front of Gusto and Song Boy in a similar task in Imin 19sec, the first three in 39soc. On the inside grass track Lord Nuffield just beat Our Pal over seven furlongs in Imin 28sec. This track is easily the fastest at Wingatui, but even making full allowance for that, the gallop was one of the best seen at Wingatui this season. Malagigi’s Rider for New Zealand Cup. The Mitcholson Cup winner Malagigi will definitely contest the New _ Zealand Cup, and will be ridden again by H. N. Wiggins. Made Money. His owner was at Wingatui this morning to see Made Money gallop, and was naturally disappointed when he pulled up lame. Made Money will go to Gore to-morrow, but it is unlikely that his New Zealand Cup engagement will be continued. Big Team for Gore. A. S. M'lvay left for Gore hy the express this morning with Astaire, Vantoon, Vallock, New Note, and Straightdell, and A. E. Didham is booked to leave to-morrow with Hunting Chorus, Araboa, Boloyna, Dissemble, and Half and Half. High Glee Amiss. After galloping on Tuesday morning High Glee was sore after cooling down, and will not be a starter at Gore or at Riccarton next month. His owner intends spoiling him for a short while until the extent of the lameness is definitely ascertained. Gore Race Card. A race card for Saturday’s meeting at Gore is acknowledged, Bracketed horses are Dora Lindsay and John Dale in the Balfour Trot; Silver Choir and Blue Sapphire, Boloyna and San Marino, and Colonel French and Lady of Spain in the Novice Handicap. Harold Logan to Reappear. After an absence of nearly two yean; from serious racing, Harold Logan is to reappear at Epsom on Saturday. The 16-year-old ex-champion is on 3.12 in a mile and a-half race, and is required to concede seven seconds to Nerire’s Last (a 2.4 miler), and 12 seconds to horses capable of breaking 3.20. New Zealand Cup Candidates at Gore. Betting is likely to take a wide range in the Walk aka Handicap on the first day of the Gore Meeting, as the majority of the field of 11 have shown recent winning or placed form. Six of the field—Milford. High Glee. Valantua, Pink Robe, Made' Money, and Ardchoille—are all engaged in the New Zealand Cup at present, but some are likely to drop out when the second acceptance is made to-morrow afternoon. Well Treated in Stewards’ Handicap. Paper Slipper’s running during the last six or eight months left the impression that he had lost interest in racing. He appears to retain all his old dash, and is not distressed at the finish of his races. The. Paper Money horse is in the Stewards’ Handicap with 8.6, the lowest weight he has been asked to carry in a handicap since he started winning as a two-year-old. A Successful Year. “ For the first time for over a quarter of a pentury the club experienced a wet day for its annual race meeting, which had promised to be one of tho best since the years of depression.” states the anilual report of th.e Wairio Jockey Club. “ Nomination and acceptance fees increased from £l7B to £lB7 10s, gate receipts from £l9B 4s to £262 9s, race card sales £54 16s 3d to £7l 17s 4d, and the totalisator turnover from £6,788 10s to £8,165 10s. Thanks very largely to the Government continuing the rebate of 1 per cent, on the investments, the fixture resulted in a net profit of £245 6s lOd, as compared with £37 0s 2d at the 1937 meeting. This profit has placed the club in a satisfactory financial position, and the cash assets now standing at £628 14s 2d, less the bank overdraft (£lO2 15s lid), show an increase on last year’s figures of £l7l 3s Id.”

Ajax’s Good Record. Ajax, the greatest horse of the moment in Australia, has won /his last nine consecutive races. In all, he has won 14 times from 18 starts, and his prize money totals £20,925. Great horses of the past have strung together long winning sequences. Gloaming and Desert Gold hold the record in Australia and New Zealand with 19 each. Phar Lap had 14 successive victories. Limerick 13, and Eurythmic 11. Peter Pan, who won two Melbourne Cups, at one stage won eight events in a row. Ajax heads the present-day racehorses in the way of stake earnings, but 22 horses have won more than £20,000 during their turf career. Ajax, however, has plenty of time to top £30,000 and more. Phar Lap’s £66,738 included the Agua Caliente Handicap (£13,700). Taking the world at large, Sun Beau (America) holds the record (£74.488), and War Admiral, with £64,575, is creeping up.
