BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS ENCOURAGING SPECIALISATION PHELAN BREAKS SHOT PUTT RECORD An innovation of far-reaching importance in athletics was made at the annua! sports of Otago Boys’ High School held to-day on the school ground at Littlebourne for the first time, when the old victor Indorum system of competition was displaced _ by the modern development of championships in sprints, middle distances, and field- events, the tendency being to prevent boys from competing in too many events and to encourage them to make that specialisation which is so necessary for success in athletics. The ground looked a picture* and was a tribute to the work that has
been put in by the groundsman (Mr D. Hanlin), the tracks being in excellent order. The over-night rain took a lot of sting out of the ground, and this made for good performances, although the fresh breeze that was_ blowing affected competitors slightly in the sprint events, some of whom, nevertheless, registered very good performances. Another feature of the meeting was that the boys themselves voluntarily forwent trophies in favour of certificates, which are to be awarded to mark their successes. The various senior championship divisions attracted very spirited competition. the sprint championship comprising 100yds, 220yds, 440yds. and 120yds hurdles; and the middle distances championship the 440yds, half-mile, and mile. The field championship comprised shot putt, javelin throwing, high jump, and long jump. It is hoped eventually to introduce a similar type
