YACHTING SEASON

ASSOCIATION'S ANNUAL MEETING OPENING DAY ON NOVEMBER 5 The adjourned annual meeting of the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association was concluded on Tuesday ■ evening, Mr J. D. Cameron presiding over an attendance of delegates from all clubs. Mr R. E. Ham was elected secretary. CORNWELL CUP TRIALS. A deputation representing owners of Takapuna class boats waited on the meeting to ask that those crews taking part in the Cornwell Cup trials should sail their own boats rather than change boats for the different trials/ It was stated that the boys the deputation represented had built their own boats and had gone to considerable expense. Each crew had some sentimental attachment to its own boat, and preferred to win or lose in it. It was pointed out by Mr E. C, Brown that there was a motion on the books to the effect that all trials should be held under contest rules, which required a change of boats for each trial, and that motion could not be rescinded without notice of motion. It was agreed that nothing further could be done in the meantime. It was decided that the first Cornwell Cup trial be held on October 29, races to be commenced at 3 p.m., and a time limit of two hours and a-balf imposed. SELECTION OF CREWS. The method of the selection of crews was discussed as the result of a question by Mr Brown, who asked whether the whole crew winning the trials should be sent to represent the province, or whether a better man could be selected to replace a forward hand. The Chairman, said he thought that suggestion was rather getting away from the spirit of the contest. Mr W, P. Gibson said crews should agree that the best crew and the best boat were the best representatives of the province. After further discussion, Mr J. Robertson moved that the sailing judges should select the winning skipper, who would select his own forward hand, and this motion was carried. RESIGNATION OF JUDGE. Mr, Brown expressed the opinion that one of the Takapuna class boats did nor comply with tjie contest specifications. It was stated that all the boats had been certified as correct, and several members expressed their confidence in the official who had measured the boats. Mr Brown then resigned from the office of . judge for the Cornwell Cup trials.. SANDERS CUP TRIALS. It was decided that the starting time for Sanders Cup trials phould be 2.30 p.m., and that the course should be th. full distance of nine miles. A time limit of three hours was imposed. The laying out of courses was left in the hands of the Sailing Committee. CUP FOR TRIALS. Mr Arnold, on behalf of the Vauxhall Club, offered a cup for the bpat gaining most points, on a handicap system, in the Sanders Cup trials. The object was to increase the enthusiasm among crews. The offer was accepted. OPENING DAY. It was decided to hold the opening day of the season at Vauxhall on November 5, and to start the second trial race on that day from Vauxhall. OLIPHANT CUP. The Vauxhall Club was asked to conduct the Oliphant Cup races this season. FINANCE REQUIRED. The Chairman said some means would have to be devised to raise funds. Mr Brown moved that the affiliation fees for this season should be increased to £4 4s. , The motion lapsed for want of a seo°DMr *O. Smith moved that the affiliation fee should be £2 2s_, and there was an amendment that it should be £3 3s. The amendment was lost, and the motion was carried. Mr Gibson suggested that further discussion on the raising of funds should be held over till next meeting, and this course was agreed to.
