NORTH OTAGO NOTES
[From Our Oamaru Correspondent.] AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION. At the monthly meeting of the Automobile Association (North Otago) the chairman (Mr W. Gillies) reported that the executive was satisfied that the parking and other by-laws in Oamaru were good, if they were enforced. There had been an improvement in their enforcement lately. Out of 13 applicants Mr 11. B, Meek was appointed canvasser. Mr Gillies reported that the Otagb Association intended to hold a reliability trial to Mount Cook and had asked that the route via Maheno and Duntroon be signposted. He said it was signposted already, Mr J. Gerrie was deputed to arrange for an outing at Kuriheka for the Oamaru Hospital nursing staff. BOWLING. The annual report of the NortE Otago Bowling Centro records a successful year. The Phoenix Club is congratulated on winning the Mills Shield and Sidey Cup competitions, and A. B. Lang on being champion of champions, A. Crichton and H. Donald on being champion pair, T. J. Moore, D. Findlay, C. Grant, and T. Kennedy on being the champion rink, and G, P. Molhson for winning the veteran’s cup. The Easter tournament was again a great success, despite rain interfering with the singles. CHORAL FESTIVAL. A very high standard of choral singing was reached at the third annual choral festival held at the Oamaru Opera House last night. The choirs taking part were as follows: —OamarU South School (conductor, Miss C. Miller), Dominican College 1 ' (Tesehemakers), Otekaike Special School (conductor, Miss Macfarlahe), St. Joseph’s School (conductor, Miss Cartwright), Oamaru North (conductor, Misa Copland), Waitaki Girls’ Junior High School (conductor, Miss I. B. Romans), Oamaru-Male Voice Choir (conductor, Mr J. Hinton). Waitaki Girls’ Senior High School (conductor, Miss Vera Slater), Waitaki Girls’ High School (combined seniors and juniors)/ Oamaru Ladies’ Choir (conductor, Mr M. A. Fastier), Waitaki Boys’ High School (conductor, Mr A. W. Gibb), Combined Adult Choirs (conductor, Mr A. W. Gibb). Percussion band items were given by St. Thomas’s Academy boys (conductor. Master Norrie Sharp) and the Waitaki Boys’ High School Brass Band (conductor, Mr P. W; Hargreaves) played two selections. OAMARU NORTH SCHOOL. '/ Advice was received at the monthly meeting of the North School Committee that the new side school at_ Casanova would be ready at the beginning of the new year. It was agreed to send 40 entrants to the school sports at Dunedin, £7 being granted towards tho cost, MOTHERS’ UNION. An enjoyable social was held to celebrate the end of the year’s work of the St. Luke’s Mothers’ Union. The programme comprised items by Mrs Stamford, Misses Jones, Millar, and Sherwin, Mr C. Cowan, Miss G. Williamson, and the Ngaio Girls’ Club. Mr H. Williamson led community singing. Competitions were won by Mrs Sprott, Mrs Stamford, Mrs Winsley, Mrs Cox, and Miss Crawshaw.
