PROVINCIAL CENTENNIAL COUNCIL
OTAGO’S REPRESENTATION AT EXHIBITION FURTHER PROGRESS REPORT The splendid lead so promptly given by the first public bodies on whom deputations from the Otago Court Committee waited in September has been well maintained. It is gratifying (states the progress report) to be able to report that those public bodies who have so far received deputations this month have in all cases voted the suggested contribution in full, whilst several public authorities, having considered tho details of the committee’s appeaf, as set out in correspondence, have voted their support without asking for a deputation to wait on them. The contributions requested were worked out on the actual population of each county and borough, this being found to he the most equitable, and the position now is that over £5,000 has been raised out of the £9,000 required. The details of the amounts, voted are as follows: —
Alexandra Borough 4 Q Bruce County ... 307 Dunedin City Council ... 3,000 Naseby Borough 10 Oamaru Borough 347 Oamaru Harbour Board 50 Otago Harbour Board 000 Palmerston Borough 37 Roxburgh Borough ... ... ... -2 Tapanui Borough ... ... 14 Tuapeka County ... 226 Vincent County ... "22 Waihemo County 60 Waitaki County 4(0 £5,202 General world wide interest in the Now Zealand Centennial Exhibition is developing. The British Government has taken 50,000. square feet of space for its pavilion, which compares very favourably with the Now Zealand Oovernment pavilion of 100,000 square feet. It is understood that Australia, South Africa, Canada, and Fiji will also bo exhibiting, whilst inquiries as to space have,, in addition, been received from the Dutch East Indies, California, and Honolulu. ADVERTISING OTAGO.
It is evident from the excellent response that is being made to the Otago Court Committee’s appeal that counties and boroughs generally throughout the province appreciate great advertising possibilities in the novel and and educative national court scheme to be housed in a pavilion of If acres; and that they also recognise that the committee’s proposals will turn these to the best possible advantage by providing an Otago area well equipped with attractive scenic and industrial features and staffed by, an efficient publicity officer thoroughly conversant with the many attractions or the province, whose business it will be to “ sell ” Otago to the thousands of overseas visitors and to our own New Zealand public as well. The sum of £9,000 appealed for is an economical one, and will be attained provided those, public bodies and primary associations, who have not yet . fully considered the matter of their contribution, grant the committee the same measure of support as has been accorded to date. Provided the full £9,000 is forthcoming the Provincial Committee can assure all concerned that Otago’s advertising display in the Centennial Exhibition will be one of which all citizens will be justly proud, and also will be one which will repay the amount invested many times over.
