COALFIELDS UNREST

EFFECTS OF AUSTRALIAN STRIKE FOREIGN TRADE PREJUDICED Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, October 18. A sidelight on the coalfields unrest was revealed to-day at the annual meeting of J. and A. Brown and Abermain Seahatn Collieries Limited, the chairman of which, Mr T. Armstrong, stated that for the past seven years the company’s dividend averaged less than ] a p er pent, per annum. He referred to the recent strike, and said it was unfortunate that the mines were thrown idle at a time when the industry was giving more employment than for many years, while every time a stoppage occurred consumers looked round for another source for the supply of heat and power. The strike had prejudiced foreign trade, and it would be most difficult to retrieve the position when work was resumed.
