CRICKET

OTAGO ASSOCIATION A meeting of the committee of the Otago Cricket Association held last night was presided over by Mr A. H. Allen. NEW CLUB. The Secretary of the Enterprise Cricket Club (Caversham) wrote applying for affiliation . with the - association and suggesting that the club’s team should be graded in the second grade B section. The secretary (Mr E. S. Wilson) reported having furnished the Enterprise Club with all necessary details, and it was decided to inform the club that its application would be dealt with by the incoming executive. It was further resolved to refer the matter to the Grade Committee in the meantime for inquiry. NOT SATISFIED. The Port Chalmers Club wrote stating that it was not satisfied with the ruling of the Grade Committee in the matter of the second grade A championship last season, when Port Chalmers and Grange were bracketed as joint winners. The letter added that the club wished to forward a statement of the case (which it enclosed) to the New Zealand Cricket Council for a

ruling. Resolved that the statement, together with the Grade Committee’s reasons for its decision in the matter, be forwarded to the council. MISSING SHIELDS. The North-east Valley Club wrote pointing out that although it had won the second grade No. 2 and third grade competitions last season and the intermediate and third grade competitions the previous season it had not received any banner or shield as the result. It was decided to supply successful clubs with a certificate for each competition won. The North-east Valley Club also forwarded the sum of £5 as a contribution to the association endowment fund, and stated that a general meeting of the club was being called in order to explain the objects of the fund to the players. Received with thanks. SIR JULIEN CAHN’S TEAM. A letter was read from the New Zealand Cricket Council stating that it had not been able to got into communication with Sir Julien Cahn concerning the desired alteration in the team’s itinerary to enable a match to be played in Dunedin. The President said that members would notice that an amended itinerary published in the Press that day had included a match with Otago in March. This was very satisfactory, he added, but he felt it was unfortunate that Southland had been left out of the programme, particularly as three matches had been arranged for the Auckland district. He thought that the Otago Association, while thanking the council for having secured a match in this city, might express regret at the exclusion of Invercargill. Mr J. A. Dunning pointed out that a match had been arranged for Oaraaru, which meant two matches in the Otago district. Mr J. M. Fraser also reminded the meeting that this tour was not on all fours with ordinary tours in the matter of organisation, and that the arrangements must necessarily be left more or less with Sir Julien. Mr Dunning said that the committee would need to be careful in framing any resolution on the matter so as not to give the impression that it was “ squealing.” The President: I have no desire to make any complaint at all. I wished merely to show our interest in Southland cricket. The New Zealand Council deserve the thanks of the Otago Association in the matter, and I think we should tell it so. It was decided to write to the council expressing the association’s gratitude for having secured a match with Otago, and at the same time expressing regret that it had not been possible to arrange a game at Invercargill. ANNUAL MEETING. It w r as resolved to hold the annual meeting of the association on Wednesday, September 28. CONGRATULATIONS. It was decided to send letters of congratulation to Mr Ken Uttley on his having been awarded the Redpath Cup for his batting performances last season; to the Otago Rugby Football Union on its success in the Ranfurly Shield contests; and to the Otago Football Association on having won the English Trophy. COACHING ARRANGEMENTS. The Coaching Committee submitted a report dealing with the coaching arrangements carried out last season. The boys had attended fairly regularly at Logan Park, the report and satisfactorily at Tonga Park. Excellent work had been done by both coaches, Mr 0. Everson and Mr A. Galland. The committee strongly recommended that the coaching of schoolboys be continued, and extended to include, say, the Kaikorai ground. Logan Park had proved to be rather faY away for many of the boys, and it was suggested that the coaching be transferred from that ground to the North Ground, where the concrete wicket formerly utilised by the ladies’ clubs could be used. The committee further suggested that the new Coaching Committee might meet, the Teachers Committee at the earliest opportunity, and that certain evenings be set aside for instructing them in the finer points of the game so that the boys might be checked in the natural tendency to relapse into bad habits of play. Mr J. Robson moved the adoption of the report, and the motion was carried, the matters mentioned therein to be referred to the incoming Coaching Committee. MORNINGTON CLUB The annual meeting of the Mornington Cricket Club was held last night. Mr A. E. Jelley occupied the chair, the president (Mr F. M. Paape) having retired during the year. Moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, Mr Jelley said that all three teams had performed creditably during the past season There had been a satisfactory increase in membership, and in spite of the difficulty being experienced with the

ground, it was hoped to be able to hold home matches in the near future. The club was in a healthy financial condition, thanks to the support given by members apart from their subscriptions. The report and balance sheet were adopted. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr E. E. Nicholson: president, Mr A. E. Jelley; vice-president—Messrs R. E. Grimmett, G. Kenn, E. C. Hall, G. Borland, T. Grimsdale; club captain, Mr C. Chirnside; deputy club captain, Mr J. Torrance; secretary, Mr C. J. Robertson; treasurer, Mr G. E. Laing; auditor, Mr T. Southall; delegate to Otago Cricket Association, Mr R. E. Grimmett; delegate to Otago Boys’ Cricket Association, Mr H. Booth; delegate to Otago Junior Cricket Council, Mr G. E Laing; selectors, Messrs C. Chirnside and R. E. Grimmett; committee— Messrs A. Roberts, D. Waller, G. Gardner, R. E. Grimmett, jun., F. Morris. Votes of thanks to Messrs F. M. Paape, the immediate past president, last year’s club captain (Mr C. Chirnside), and the secretary and treasurer were passed with acclamation. October 8 was fixed as the opening dale. Mr G. E. Laing raised the question of forming a society which would issue debentures for the building of a new pavilion. He moved that a special committee be set up to investigate the position. —Messrs R. E. Grimmett, J. Torrance, and G. E. Laing were elected to a committtee to report to the next general meeting. Dissatisfaction was expressed by members as to the state of the ground, which was considered hardly fit for practices, and certainly impossible for competitive games. It was suggested that the club turf the wicket instead of leaving matters to the Reserves Committee of the City Council, but >1 was finally decided to bring the matter before the notice of the Cricket Association, .
