JUDGMENT FOR SELASSIE
CLAIM AGAINST GABLES AND WIRELESS STAY OF EXECUTION GRANTED Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, July 27. (Received July 28, at 8 a.m.) Mr Justice Bennett, in giving judgment in favour of Haile Selassie, with costs, against Cables and Wireless Ltd., said he had doubt whether the defendants could safely pay the plaintiff and granted a stay of execution in view of an appeal. [Haile Selassie demanded £10,613 from Cables and Wireless, due under an agreement which the company contended applied to whoever was Sovereign of Ethiopia. A reply from the Foreign Office on the question was read out. It stated that Britain recognised the Italian Government as the. Government de facto of virtually the whole of Ethiopia. A message received on June 30 stated: —The Court of Appeal allowed, with costs, the appeal of Haile Selassie against the dismissal of his claim against Cables and Wireless. The Master of the Rolls, giving judgment, said there was no rule of law depriving the Emperor of the right to make a claim. The action did not seek to bring the King of Italy before the courts, and the fact that Italy also claimed money had not affected the position.]
