OTAGO CHESS CLUB

AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION'S ADDRESS The first lecture by Mr Gregory Kosbnitsky, the Australian chess champion, was given to members of the Otago Chess Club on Tuesday evening. There was a largo attendance of members and visitors The French and Sicilian defences, both popular in the club, were described and commented upon in the first part of the address, and with the aid of the demonstration board Mr Kosbnitsky illustrated the points of his discourse with several correspondence games he has been conducting in Australia. The variations shown were extremely interesting and new to most of the audience, and this, combined with the lecturer’s extremely happy style, made the evening one of the most enjoyable the dull members have ever experienced. After answering a large variety of questions and giving various interesting examples of sacrificial combinations, Mr Kosbnitsky was accorded an enthusiastic vote of thanks on the motion of the club president (Dr E, W. Bennett). Owing to the fact that the clubrooin must be rearranged for tho telegraphic match, the programme for the remainder of Mr Koshnitsky’s stay in Dunedin will be as follows:—To-night, 7.30, simultaneous display; to-morrow, 7.30, simultaneous display; Monday, 8, lecture. This lecture on Monday will be given in deference to the wishes of the many visitors who enjoyed last Tuesday’s programme. BLEDISLOE CUP. Advice has been received that the interisland club championship final for the Bledisloe Cup will be contested against the Wellington Club, which defeated the Auckland Club by 10i games to 9J. The local team has defeated Canterbury by 12 games to 6, with two games now under adjudication. The final will be played off on Saturday and Saturday week, the players being requested to be present at 7.15. The Otago team will be selected from the following:—K. S. Allen, W. H.
