ORDER OF ST. JOHN

FUNDS CARNIVAL BEGINS ' POPULAR. VARIED ENTERTAINMENT An attraction that promises to bo popular over the next few days is the carnival being held by tho St. John Ambulance Association, which was opened Inst night by the deputy-mayor (Mr D. C. Cameron). There was a largo number present in the new headquarters building recently presented to the association by Mr S. Saltzman, which was gaily decorated for tho occasion. Tho carnival spirit was further added to by music by the St. Joseph’s Orphanage Boys’ Band. Introducing Mr Cameron, Colonel P. H. Morey, assistant commissioner for Otago, said that the carnival was being held for the purpose of raising funds to equip the various divisions of the brigade in order that they might continue their humanitarian work of rendering first aid to the injured. This work was voluntary, and all money collected would be used to equip and strengthen tho brigade. He urged the public to support the function in order that the work might go on and be so extended that it included the whole of tho Otago district. Mr Cameron, who performed the opening ceremony in the absence of the mayor (Mr A. H. Allen), who is in Wellington, also commended the work done by members of the brigade, describing it as worthy of the support of the citizens of Dunedin. “ I wish specially to urge sporting bodies to support this carnival,” said Mr Cameron. “ Members of the bn- • gade are carrying out their duties on the sporting fields of this city every Saturday, and this carnival will provide an opportunity for tho sporting bodies to repay some of the debt of gratitude owed to tho brigade.” Mr Cameron concluded by complimening the officials on the lay-out of the various stalls, and declared the carnival open. Brisk trade was done by the stalls and side-shows during the evening, and downstairs, in addition to moving pictures and demonstrations by a sleight-of-hand expert, dancing was provided to music supplied by a local band. The carnival will remain open until Saturday, the music to-night being supplied by the St. Kilda Municipal Band, and to-morrow by the Dunedin Highland Pipe Band. On Saturday a special dance will be held in the ballroom.
