THE LANCASHIRE MATCH

AUSTRALIA 14 RUNS AHEAD HOME TEAM'S GOOD RECOVERY TWO STUBBORN PARTNERSHIPS Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, June 20. (Received June 21, at 11 a.m.) The weather was cool and dull for the resumption of play. Phillipsou, reopening with fine pace, got Barnett in the third over. No rain has fallen since Saturday and the wicket is still good. ■ Waite was shaky against both Phillipson and Nutter, while Hassett was in half an hour to-day without scoring. Finally he was clean bowled with a vicious oif break without adding to his score. His innings lasted four hours and he hit 13 4’e. Waite was out in Wilkinson’s first over, the ball turning slightly from leg. White hung on with remarkable solidity against excellent bowling. Fleetwood-Smith was unable to bat owing to having undergone a dental operation during the week-end. M'Cormick never looked capable of staying, and the innings ended at 12.40.

M‘Cormick and Waite opened the attack against Lancashire. Waite yorked Wash brook in the first over, and a little later got Paynter leg before. Lancashire had two wickets down for 19 runs.

Iddon and Oldfield then made a stand, realising 107 runs. Oldfield was the most stylish batsman for Lancashire. He pulled and cut delightfully, while Iddon played with unhurried comfort. One hundred was raised in 95 minutes, the second 60 having taken only 30 minutes. Chipperfieid was called to the crease for the first time .for a month to vary the attach, which seemed in danger of being collared. M'Cormick, who earlier bowled with imposing speed, was recalled at 126 and got Iddon with his first ball and Oldfield two overs later. Both spooned a ball to silly mid-on. Oldfield batted 105 minutes. He hit 10 4’s.

M'Cormick took a brilliant left-hand catch off his own bowling to dismiss Nutter. Lancashire, with seven wickets down for 169, was again in a poor position, but Phillipson and Farrimond added 71 for the eighth wicket in a courageous stand. The county was out after 275 minutes, having made a surprising recovery. Details:—
