COLLIE DOG TRIALS

SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS The seventh championship trials under the auspices of the South Island Sheep Dog Association wore commenced on Mr W. S. Thomson’s Glenfalloch property at Warepa yesterday. The weather was cold in the morning, but improved later in the day. to again become cold in the late afternoon. A start was made about 9 a.m., and so good was the progress made that the first event, the long pull, was completed and a start made with the short head. The work, although nothing outstanding, was of a fair average, particularly by the placed dogs. The ground was a bit tricky for the long pul), a dip between the hill and the ring preventing owners from seeing either sheep or dogs for a brief interval. _ The officials of the Warepa Club, with Mr S. Peterson as president, and Messrs I. Masters and L. Edwards as ecretaries, had arrangements well in hand. Entries were not quite up to the usual, this being no doubt due to the lateness of holding the trials. Three judges, representatives of Canterbury, Otago, and Southland, officiated—namely, Messrs C. 6. Cran, A. Henderson, and J. M‘Crostie respectively, and their decisions met with general satisfaction. The points of the three judges are added together and the dog with the highest aggregate secures the award. The result of yesterday’s event was:—

Class I.—Heading, bringing back, holding in ring for half a minute. About half-mile. Total points, 60. Prizes: £ls, £lO, £5, £3, £2, £l.

There were 33 competed. SPECIAL PRIZES. The only special allocated yesterday was the Commemoration Shield donated by the Southern Collie Club Association for class 1., and this was won by It. Wilson (Kirwee). .SHEEP DOG ASSOCIATION. —Annual Meeting.— The annual meeting of the South Island Sheep Dog Association was held in Balclutha last night, Mr W. G. Thompson (Middlemarcn) presiding. Before proceeding with the business of the meeting the chairman referred to the loss sustained to collie clubs in general by the death of Mr John Anderson, late of “ Bog Roy,” Kurow, and a motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried in the usual way. —Report and Balance Sheet. —

The annual report and balance sheet were presented. These showed that the financial position had improved by £35 16s 6d on the year’s operations. The treasurer (Mr Trotter) stated that all 63 clubs, with the exception of two, had paid their levies promptly, and it was stated that these two clubs had now remitted, so that the association had had 100 per cent, collection.—The re-

port and balance sheet were adopted, the position disclosed being considered very satisfactory. —Election of Officers.— „ The following office-bearers were elected;—President, Mr Dampier-Crossly; vice-presidents—Messrs A. Trumper, W. S. Thomson, A. D. Finlayson, and H. Y. Monro (Marlborough-Blenbeim); secretary, Mr Whyte (re-elected); treasurer, Mr Trotter (re-elected); hon. auditor, Mr L. H. Grenfell (Oamaru); representatives to New Zealand Association—President, Messrs Finlayson, W G. Thompson, and M. B. Hope (Marlborough-Blenheirn). It was further decided to recommend to the New Zealand Association that Mr Crossly be appointed president for the ensuing year, —General. — The Chairman explained that the New Zealand Association was desirous of establishing a fund for the purpose of providing trophies for the championship events in the event of these not being donated. Members considered the idea a good one. and it was decided to make a grant of £7 7s for the 1939 championships. The newly-elected president said be would donate £lO towards the trophies, while the secretary intimated that Mr Thompson had also donated a trophy, which meant that only one had to be secured. —It was left to the president and secretary to attend to this. Some discussion took place on whether the South Island Association or provincial associations should grant permits to A. and P. societies and other unaffiliated bodies to conduct trials, and it was finally decided that appli-

cations for these permits should go through the South Island body, the secretary to have the power to grant same. It was decided that the 1939 South Island and New Zealand championships be held at Tai Tapu, near Christchurch. Warepa Club was granted £lO in appreciation of the work done in connection with the trials at present being held, and/a vote of thanks was accorded the officials for the way in which they had carried out the arrangements. It was decided that the rule regarding the extra fee for late entries be strictly enforced this year, and that it be a recommendation to the executive that in future no late entries be taken at association meetings, and that any competitor not present to take his run, as drawn, forfeit his run. Next meeting was fixed for November 18, at Oamaru. Several members paid a tribute to the work of the secretary, and he was voted an increased honorarium, and suitably replied. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr W. S. Thomson for his generosity in providing the ground and sheep for the trials, Before the meeting dispersed the retiring president installed the newlyelected president.
