DRUNKEN DRIVERS.

TO THE EDITOR. . Sir, —“ Awaiting Results,” in hig letter of J une 20, comments, on the fact that the daily Press recently informed us of the “ astounding ” news that the N.Z.L.V.A. offered their co-operation to eliminate drunken drivers. Why “ astounding” news? Surely the brewers themselves should be the first to resent the criminal abuse of their product. Had “ Awaiting Results ” been a regular reader of your paper he would ave seen the enclosed advertisement, entitled “We who brew beer say: Dunking and driving do not mix,” •which appeared in the ‘ Evening Star ’ on Saturday, May 28. I kept a copy of the advertisement because 1 was impressed by the fact that one brewery company, anyway, was sincere in its effort to promote saner, safer driving. As it happens, the advertisement was signed: The Dunedin Brewery Co. Ltd. —the Home of “ West End ” Beer, •whose Neon light notices your correspondent takes exception to. For the sake of fair play I think we should give credit where credit is due. Incidentally, neither the Hon. R. Semple nor the N.Z.L.V.A. can purge the country of drunkenness by their own efforts. The responsibility lies with each individual member of the community—by example and by the influence we have with our friends.—l am. etc., Crusader. June 21. [As “ Crusader ” states, an advertisement measuring 63 square inches and entirely devoted to reasons why motorists should not consume alcohol while driving was inserted in the ‘ Star ’ on May 28 by the Dunedin Brewery Company Ltd. in the interests of the “ Safety on the Roads ” campaign.— Ed. E.S.]
