SOCCER

POSITIONS OF TEAMS The following table gives the positions of the teams in the Fletcher Cup competition:—

TWO POOR DISPLAYS HILL TROUNCE TECHNICAL With practically no understanding in the forward line, except on rare occasions, a dubious half tine, and one hard-worked defender in the backs, Technical proved no match for : Maori Hill, being trounced to the tune of 7 goals to 0. Maori Hill was well to the fore in the first half, netting five goals, but they were little better as a team than their opponents in the second. Even allowing for the heavy ground, it was a poor game.; The teams were;—; Maori Hill.—Holden; Taylor, Bayne; Haldane, Cuthbert, Little; Wadsworth, Mills, Henderson, Gilchrist, Balk. Technical Old Boys. Torrance; Duerdon, Lawrence; Chapman, Patton, Groves; Wilson, Howie, Thomas, Bennett, Freeman. Setting a smart pace from the outset, Maori Hill penetrated deep; Henderson lifted a Jong shot to Torrance, who saved nicely. Still maintaining the pressure. Hill opened their account within the first five minutes. Balk placed to the feet of Henderson, who back-heeled finely to goal, forrauce partially saved, but the greasy ball eluded his grasp, rolling through his legs towards the line and Mills dashed up to finalise easily before the ’keeper could turn. Maori Hill 1, Technical 0. The latter had been playing a man short up to this stage. Another characteristic cross by Balk gave Torrance an anxious moment, but he saved well, while Gilchrist missed an easy sbot from close in, technical were a ragged eleven showing little understanding of team work, while the Hill forwards were swinging the ball gaily in direct contrast. Cuthbert, substituting at centre-half for Alec. Sutherland, sent on neatly to Mills, who had little difficulty in completing from an easy position. Maori Hill 2, Technical 0. Ten minutes saw three goals registered, .conning .from the foot of"Mills.'again’., Gilchrist took' possession when Wadsworth swung a brilliant cross to Torrance, who slipped to a clean spot and placed to the goal mouth. Henderson heeled again, but it was a poor effort, and Mills had a close-range shot. Maori Hill 3, Technical 0.

From a corner by Wadsworth that went close Balk, in dose, attempted a shot, but it was poorly directed and flew past. Technical had a royal chance when Bayne sent' back to Taylor, but the Technical centre forward. Thomas, who look possession midway, sent a weak pass to Truman, the only forward following up, and Taylor cleared. Though they held the territorial advantage for some minutes. Technical’s attempts at goal were futile, though there was one pretty interpassing movement among the forwards that went close. The side seemed to be settling down better now, and Maori Hill were having - their turn at the defensive, but. then - came away strongly to pen their opponents in their own half. Cuthbert, who was playing a sound game in a strange position, made the first determined shot in 10 minutes. Two goals, from the foot of Henderson, then came in quick time. Both were near shots, the result of halves-forwards combination just before the interval. Maori Hill 5, Technical 0.

Clark replaced Chapman on the resumption ; the latter received an injury from a hard collision and went to hospital though he had completed the first spell. After a quarter of an hour had elapsed, Mills had a golden opportunity when be ran through on his own, but from five yards he shot direct to the custodian. After a further 10 minutes, Thomas and Howie had shots for Technical, but Holden had little difficulty in clearing. Spasmodic play was the rule, but Balk relieved the monotony by sending over a brilliant cross that hit the far upright; the rebound was cleared. Thomas headed neatly to goal, but Holden cleared. After an interval, Mills went away fast from a clearance, and shot along the carpet. The attempt went wide, but Henderson ran up to shoot strongly. An almost identical movement, except that Henderson received a pass direct, added to the tally, and the game ended: Maori Hill ... 7. Technical Old Boys 0. Mr F. Stanley controlled the game.

A GOOD RECOVERY NORTHERN AND WORKINGTON DRAW With the score 3-0 against them in the early part of the second spell of the game against Northern at Mornington, the latter side made a fine recovery to draw with the score 3-all.
