MOLDAVIA TO BE SCRAPPED. One of the oldest ships in tho Australian mail service, tho liner Moldavia (10,556 tons gross), built in 1922 by Cammed, Laird Ltd., Birkenhead, has been sold out of tho P. and O. licet. The vessel has been purchased by John Cashmere Ltd., Newport, for about £38,0(10, and will be broken up. Tho Moldavia and her sister ship, the Mongolia, wore withdrawn from the Australian trade towards the end of last year, to make way for the new liners Stratheden and Strathallau, both of which have already been placed in commission. Tho Moldavia was built soon after the Great War, when tho P. and 0. Company needed new tonnage to replace its heavy war losses. Named after a ship which had been lost by enemy action in May, 1918, the Moldavia was constructed on practical and comfortable lines, which appealed to travellers between Australia and England. She was built originally to carry first and second class passengers. In 1930 her accommodation was changed to first and third, and a year later the whole of it was converted to tourist class, making the ship one of tho pioneers of tourist class travel. The innovation proved so popular that it has ‘since been generally adopted in the Australian trade. A point of interest was that tho Moldavia was built with only one fim-
nel, but a second funnel was added after the vessel had been in service for some time as a concession to public prejudice against single-funnel ships. Public opinion on the matter of funnels has since changed to such an extent that each of the latest additions to the Australian mail fleet has been built with only on© funnel. RABUAL IN PORT. The llabaul, ex George Washington, paying her first visit to the Dominion, is berthed at Victoria wharf, discharging sulphur from Galveston. She is a motor ship of 7,093 tons, and was built nt Copenhagen in 1916. The vessel is owned by W. 11. Carpenter and Co., of Sydney. Her regular trade route is between London, Galveston, Fiji, New Guinea, and Australia. On her present trip she loaded 4,604 tons of sulphur for discharge at Lyttelton, Dunedin and Wanganui. She also loaded 12 pedigree bulls and 12 heifers for Fiji. The stock was landed at the island in excellent condition. IN RADIO RANGE.
