Just before midnight, with 54 booths received out of a total of 94, Citizens’ Association, candidates, who held 11 of the 16 seats in the last council, wera holding nine against Labour’s seven. The position could easily be affected by the later returns. In the Hospital Board election, with three-quarters of the returns to hand, Labour was holding five seats and the Citizens’ Association four. The Citizens’ nominees held five seats and Labour four on the last board. In the Lyttelton Harbour Board election, with two-thirds of the poll counted. Labour appears likely to take all four city seats. The three sitting Citizens’ Association candidates appear likely to be defeated
