RUGGED WRESTLERS

Wrestling of the rugged type which appeals most strongly to New Zealand audiences will be seen at Dunedin on Saturday. May 14, when a professional match will be presented between Pat Meehan, who created a fine impression when he drew with “Lofty” Blomfield in his first local match* and “ Irish ” Jack Kennedy, who has been responsible for a fever of excitement wherever he has appeared. Meehan’s capabilities. and style are appreciated by'local' enthusiasts, _ and Kennedy, who is similar in physique, favours the popular rugged kind of tactics. He is a big man, over 6ft in height and weighing 16st 41b, and he isso fast on his feet that he can use. flying tackles and dropkicks with deadly precision. He was introduced to wrestling while at college, and subsequently: had .a year’* tuition from Farmer Bums be-fore-turning He is an extremely versatile wrestler, haying an almost endless variety of attacking and defensive ! holds, while his immense strength further helps to make him a really formidable proposition... One of his; best achievements was .to heat Yvon Robert, and another of his victims was Stanley Pinto,' whom New Zealanders have good cause to remember as an extremely tough wrestler. Meehan jumped into the limelight because of the manner in which he dealt with Blomfield, resisting every effort of the New Zealand champion, to snatch victory at the last minute by using the octopus clamp. A . stout heart and powerful limbs were essential at such a moment, and Meehan, who has been trained m endurance while serving with the Canadian North-West Mounted ' Police, showed that he possessed what was needed.
