NOTES ON THE FIXTURE [Special to the ‘ Star.’] The Amberley Racing Club’s Meeting was very successful, notwithstanding that the turnover was seriously affected by three small fields. The day was beautifully fine, in contrast to a long spell of broken weather, and in spite of heavy rain on the previous day, the grounds and track were in excellent order. A feature of the day’s racing was \ the success of the maiden Gillie in the principal event, the G. B. Starky Memorial Handicap for hacks. He had i ran unplaced in the Novice Stakes, six | furloims, about two hours previously, and naturally did not carry much

money when saddled up again for ‘a mile and. a-quarter ordeal. However, he went to the front from barrier riss, and, holding the field down to almost three-quarter pace, he was able to hold his . position throughout. His fel-low-light-weight Settlement ran up to him early in the run home, and tho pair were engaging in a prolonged! struggle when Shirred Ribbon appeared- wide out. A great 1 tussle ensued, Gillie hanging on to beak Settlement by a-head, with a slightly: wider margin to Shirred Ribbon. Rabble, who was never dangerous, _ was two lengths away clear of Drinkup and Happy Night. The last-named, a good favourite, could not act on the turhing track, and was never within reach of the leaders.

The first open event, the Glasnevin Handicap, only had five starters, and after the veteran Great Star, making another reappearance, had Jed for a furlong, Wine Card shot to the frontand was never in danger of being overhauled. Golden Chest followed her into the straight, andl held on to her position some five lengths in front of Pelmet, with Acceptable’and Great Star tailing off. Acceptable dwelt when the barrier went up, and -could not, or would not, raise a gallop afterwards. The second open event, the Amberley Handicap, also attracted ;four contestants only, and Davolo was sent out a good favourite, but: although putting up a stubborn fight He was no match for the Reefton winder Mungatoon, :who headed the pacemaker Linguist at the straight entrance, and went ojn do win comfortably. Davolo finished with rare dash after being in the rear, for over a mile, and got up to deprive Glenogil of second money on the post. Linguist stopped -badly. Davolo would probably have won with a little fur-, ther to go, and his effort suggested hik prospects in the Ashburton Cup. ; The Novice , Stakes; was - decisively won by the Chokebore filly Scuffle, who is thus the first of the stable’s two-, year-olds to get on the winning list this season, a most unusual record for the establishment. Gay Parade, by Nightmarch from the one-time’ speedy Gay Sonnet, had a substantial lead entering the straight from Scuffle and Merry March; but Scuffle had . him beaten 50yds from the post, and then Merry March having his first, race ; for his new Christchurch owner, headed him off for. second. The favourite, Night Hawk, who owed his position to L. J. Ellis riding him, was the last away, and finished well into fourth place, with Gillie, The Wrecker, and Knignt Commander next. There was a mild surprise m the Brackenfield High-weight Handicap, the fifth choice, Supreme Court, trained for Dr J. Simpson, of Westport, by W. Cameron, leading practically throughout. He was well clear of Paper Note, Drinkup, and Owlsgleam in a bunch entering tho straight, and cantered home with throe lengths to spare. In a hard tussle for second money Drinkup got up to beat Paper Note by a neck, with Bright Prospect and Courtyard next. Financier© was considered the best proposition for the Seadown Handicap, but after leading from the outset to the straight entrance, she gave up, and Lady Leigh, running past her, soon had the race in her keeping, winning without any pressure from Flame Queen, who was always prominent, and finished strongly. Glenacre also put in good work at the close to just tail to catch Flame Queen, with another short margin to Cocksure, %vho was likely a furlong from home but did not complete his task as solidly as usual.
