HISS MONA LEYDON’S VISIT The visit of Miss Mona Leydon to Dunedin for the Kiwi Amateur Swimming Club’s carnival next Wednesday promises to be a most outstanding attraction, as she has been easily New Zealand’s foremost swimmer this season, and at the Empire Games in Sydney the Auckland girl was. one of the outstanding stylists in action. Miss Leydon will compete in a 220yds invitation handicap, in which the field will include the most promising girl swimmer in the province, Miss Christine Garvin, of the Kiwi Club, who this season created a big upset at the New Zealand intermediate championships by defeating Miss Kathleen Grey in the 100yds event and swimming second to Miss Grey, over 220yds. Miss Leydon and Miss Garvin ’ will be opposed by some of Otago’s leading men swimmers, these comprising J. W. Glulee, P. Young, P. F. Foote, and C. Kidd. There will be good competition in the back stroke event, the starters including Miss Leydon (holder of the . New Zealand title),“ Arthur Thomas (who gave Peter Mathieson such a great race in the national 100yds mens’event), Keith Leckie (one of the promising back stroke exponents), B. Kerr, and several others. In the 220yds breast stroke event the starters will include J. C. W. Davies and Miss Winnie Dunn (New Zealand Empire Games representatives), and Miss Gwen Rix (the Empire Games diver and New Zealand champion) will give a display of diving. D. Freeman (Otago men’s champion), Miss R. Smith (New Zealand _ intermediate girls’ champion), Miss _M. Stewart (New Zealand junior girls’ champion), and V. Eckhoff (Otago junior boys’ champion) will also give a diving display, the humorous touches being provided by A. Thomas, There will he a 10-a-side relay between Kiwi and Dunedin, each man doing 66 2-3yds, a three-a-side medley relay, and numerous junior and intermediate handicaps will also be staged. A big contingent of swimmers from Balclutha will be competing, and' altogether the carnival should be a great wind-up to the season.
