CIVIC AFFAIRS
MEETING OF COBKIL The fortnightly meeting of the City Council, held last night, was attended by Crs W. Begg (in the chair), W. A. Scott. M. Silverstone, R. Harrison, A. H. Allen, F. W. Mitchell, D. C. Cameron, W. W. Batchelor, and W. H. Shepherd. ANNIVERSARY SERVICE. Tho Session Clerk, First Church of Otago, wrote inviting the mayor and mayoress and the councillors and their wives to attend the evening service at First Church on Sunday, March 20, the ninetieth anniversary of the province. —Resolved that the invitation be accepted. SUBDIVISION REJECTED TO. Cr Shepherd, moved the adoption of the Works and Water Committee. Cr Mitchell objected to sub-section A of section 1 providing for the subdivision of lot 70 and 71, Hopetoun Estate, fronting Jordan street, on the ground of the extraordinary manner in which it was proposed to sub-divide the four allotments involved. There was no reason, he said, why proper provision had not been made for laying it out. Cr Silverstone said the committee was satisfied that the best way of subdividing had been adopted. It was a question of frontage, and the suggestion that the committee was doing something which would bring about slum conditions was absurd. Cr Mitchell: That is a matter of opinion. Cr Cameron, speaking against the amendment, pointed out that every one of the sections had a frontage to the only street which bordered on them. Cr Shepherd, replying, said that the proposed subdivision had a distinct advantage over subdivisions which necessitated “ long legs ” as entrances. The subdivision in the present case might not be ideal, but it was the best possible under the circumstances. The amendment was lost and the report adopted. SUBURBAN WATER CHARGES BILL. In connection with the Suburban Water Charges Bill Cr Begg, who moved the adoption of the Water Committee’s report, said that tho Hon. F. i Jones had shown a good deal of tact ; and ability by bringing outside boroughs and the city together in this matter, As tho present session was likely to be a short one it would be necessary that no time be lost in sending the Bill on to the Local Bills Committee. The report was adopted. TENDERS. The tender of Mr G. Boyes, Wellington, for the supply and delivery of three tons of hard-drawn copper trolley wife in the sura of £75 5s > a ton was accepted. A- and T. Burt’s Ltd. tender for the purchase of 100 tons of scrap cast iron in the sum of £3 a ton was accepted. The tender of Ford Motors Ltd. for the supply and delivery of a half-ton truck for the gas department in the sum of £215 was accepted.
