CHINESE PLACE NAMES
Many place names in the news of the Chinese-Japaaese war have English equivalents. Here are some : Shanghai—Above the sea. Peiping—Northern Peace. Formerly it was called—and the Japanese have proposed to restore this name—Peking, Northern Capital, to distinguish it from Nanking—Southern Capital. Then there is Tokio—Eastern Capital, and Hsinking (Manchukuo) —The New Capital. Hopeh (Worth China Province) — North of the River (the Yellow River). Honan—South of the River. Shantung—East of the Mountain. Shansi—West of the Mountain. Suiyuan—Distant Security. Taiyuanfu; capital of Shansi—City of the Grand Tlain. ■ Tazang—Big Place. Nanziang—Southward Soaring. Kiating—Pleasant Decision. Tehchow —Place of Virtue. Shuntehfi;—City of Obedient Virtue.
