CALEDONIAN GAMES
SOCIETY’S SEVENTY-SIXTH GATHERING FORBURY WINS PAAPE GUP With one of the most comprehensive sports programmes staged in. Dunedin for many years, the Caledonian Society of Otago celebrated its seventy-sixth anniversary gathering at the Caledonian Ground to-day, the favourable weather conditions attracting a good crowd of spectators before the afternoon was long advanced. In recent years the Caledonian Society has made strenuous efforts to regain its former prestige and popularity, and the success of these efforts has been due in no small measure to the organisation of the secretary (Mr J. S. Douglas). To-day’s programme comprised primary and secondary school events, the former being decided during the morning, while Highland dancing events were also held before lunch. The main attractions of the afternoon programme were the iaterhouse competitions for men and women, in connection with which were staged most spectacular march pasts. Track and field' athletic, wrestling, and cycling events provided good competition, and the selections by the Kaikoxai Brass Band and the Dunedin Highland and M'Glashan Pipe Bands added to the enjoyment of the afternoon. A gymnastic display was given by members of the Young Men’s Christian Association. The Paape Grand Challenge Cup for most points in primary school championship events was won by Forbury with 38 points, Dunedin North Intermediate being runners-up with 31, Macandrew Road third with 19, Christian • Brothers next with 14, and Musselburgh 12.
