GOLF NOTES

[By Slice.]

Otago Club. A foursome bogey handicap proved a popular fixture last. Saturday; Three pairs’ returned the excellent' score of 2 up. These were T. B. Ferguson and A. H. Boyd, W. G. Wight and A. Lucas, T. C, Tyrrell and B. S. Bevin. Several well-known combination* failed to live up to their reputations, including T. W. Wight and ,L. 8,Whinam, who, from a handicap' of 5, finished 1 down. J. H. M'Dougall and J. W. M'lntosh were going well to the turn' but from there faded away to finish all square from a 3 handicap. T. B. Ferguson is always to the fora these days, and the committee, has wisely decided to reduce both his and J. A. Secular’s handicap to scratch. These two players are the most consistent scorers in the Otago ..Club, and have well earned the honour of playing from scratch. The club can now boast four players on the -zero mark, the other two being K. Ross and, A. G, Sime. It would be interesting to know if any other club in New Zealand could field a team of 12 players on handicaps of four and under as the Otago Club undoubtedly can. Otago Ladies’ Club. . ..M The’ Otago ladies open tournament will be played on Baliruacewdn from April 6 to 9. ■ J. P. Hornafarook. Talking of J. P. Hornabrook, whom Gene Sarazen declared was- the best over there, and who is at present the New Zealand amateur champion, ho said that this fine young player had curtailed his backswing and. had improved immensely with regards accuracy and direction. Hornabrook, who came to New South Wales in 1933 with the Kirk-Windeyer Cup team, was noted for his long hitting (says an Australian writer), but at the time he was too inaccurate to be I 'tanked equal to the best.
