HOSPITAL BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Hospital Board was held' last night. Present were Mr J. W. Dove (chairman), Misses Runciman and Farquhar, Dr Newlands, Messrs M'Lennan, Venn, and Steel. MOTION OF SYMPATHY. Before commencing the business of the meeting reference was made by the chairman to the tragedy which, had occurred at the Public Works camp near Gisborne. It was a national tragedy, he said, and one that must touch all hearts by reason of its magnitude. A resolution of sympathy with the relatives of those who had lost their lives was passed l , members standing in silence. MEMORIAL BUILDING. A notification was received from, the town clerk that the Otago Centennial Committee had decided to adopt the provision of a cancer department building as one of the memorials to mark the New Zealand, centennial in 1940. “ It is- right that the board should convey its thanks to the committee for its offer,” remarked the Chairman, and a resolution to that, effect was carried. GRANT TO DENTAL SCHOOL.The. Registrar of the University of Otago wrote asking for an increase in the grant to the Dental School. The matter was referred to the Budgeting Committee for a report. ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION, An application was received from the St. John Ambulance Association asking that the board receive a deputation requesting an increased annual grant.— Agreed to. X-RAY APPARATUS., Dr E. T. D’Ath wrote expressing his thanks for the board’s appreciation of the assistance he had given regarding the deep X-ray therapy plant. Dr D’Ath also advised the board that the Otago and Southland division of the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society had decided to make a donation of £2.611, subject to the consent of the Central Committee, for the provision of certain apparatus. The Chairman said it was a most gratifying offer, and it was decided to thank the division. PATIENTS. The Secretary reported that on January 31 there were 179 male patients in the Hospital and 146 female, making a total of 325. In addition there were 114 inmates in the Benevolent Institution. ACTING THERAPY DEPARTMENT. The report of the Hospital Committee stated that the chairmen of the board and Works Committee had been authorised to act and report in refer-

ence to the provision of temporary aoi eommodation and an actino therapy department in view of installation of new plant and alterations to radios logical department. ‘ The Chairman suggested that they should extend the massage department by absorbing what is, now known as the T.B. outpatients’ department, and provide temporary accommodation for the latter. jj
