BURNSIDE STOCK SALES

CATTLE PRICES EASE Fat cattle at the Burnside stock sales to-day showed an. easing at the finish of from 10s to 15s for prime sorts, and rather more on other types. The most decided decrease was on medium and light stuff. Fat sheep had not been offered, though the yarding was better in quality than at the last market. Fat lamb prices were from parity to a shade firmer than last week. Another fair penning of fat cattle was forward to-day, about 310 being yarded. The quality as far as fat bullocks were concerned was on a par with that of last week, only about three trucks being present. There was a better display of middle-weights, and a smaller entrj of light stuff. Good cows and heifers were more prominent than at the last market, the bulk of the entry comprising this sex-. As usual, there was a large number of medium types, with a follow-on of light and weedy stuff. Good competition was in evidence from the outset for all prime stuff, though there_ was perhaps a slight easing for unfinished sorts. The sale continued on this basis for a few races, when a decided easing took place, this being most noticeable on medium and lightweights. Prices to-day can be quoted at from 10s to 15s lower for prime cattle, with slightly more of a decrease on poorer types. The top price was for a specially fine consignment sold for Hastings Brothers, of Stirling, these bringing £l6 12s 6d. Fat sheep had a medium entry, approximating 850. Generally, the quality showed an improvement on that of last week. Wethers had a smaller yarding, while the majority of this sex was of good type and displayed fair condition. Some of the tops were good weighty sorts, but there was a sprinkling or light stuff, which was totally unsuitable for butchers. A big percentage of ewes was yarded, but the entry of primes was considerably, better than usual. Medium sheep were penned in good numbers. There was a smaller, tailing of light stuff this week. No prices were available at the time of going to press, the sale not having commenced. Fat lambs had a medium entry. Quality generally was much better than at the last sale, there being a much smaller proportion of light and unfinished stuff. Taking into consideration the fact that most of the farmers had previously disposed of the tops of their drafts to the freezing company, the quality could be classed even as good. Bidding was brisk to-day, all exporters operating keenly at prices that appeared to be in excess of schedule rates. The sale throughout was good, prices being from parity Jo a shade firmer than late rates. Vealers had a large entry of approximately 120 head. Values, as a result, were lowered by 10s a head. The best sold to £3 19s; mediums, from £2 to £3 2s 6d; and lights, from £1 10s to £2. A large entry of_ store cattle was, made up mostly of mixed sorts, with an odd pen of £wo and three-year-old steers. The demand was slack because of the continued dry weather having had an effect on the quality. Prices were 10s a head easier. The best three-year-old bullocks brought from £6 5s to £8 10s; two-year-olds, from £4 5s to £5 15s; heifers, from £2 10s to £5; and young cows, from £1 10s to £4 ss. An average yarding of boner cows sold at late rates.

Of the fat pigs yarded, the haconers sold at from‘£2 15s to £3 ss, or from 6d to 6Jd lb, while the haconers brought from £1 18s to £2 12s, or about 7d lb. ' ", - - Fat cattle prices :
