PROFESSIONAL GOLFERS

ANNUAL TOURNAMENT MURRAY WINS SOUTHLAND CHAMPIONSHIP fPxn United Press Association.] INVERCARGILL, February 13. A brilliant fourth round of 69 after losing bis ball at the first hole gave A. A. Murray (Auckland) the Southland provincial professional golf championship, his total score for four rounds being 284. Another Aucklander, T. S. Galloway, was runner-up with 287. The tournament, which is an annual one conducted by the Professional Golfers’ Association in a different centre each year, occupied three days. The first and second rounds were played yesterday, and the third and fourth to-day, the leather being fine and hot throughout. A north-west wind sprang up at 11 o’clock yesterday morning, but had died down to a mere breeze by the time the afternoon round was started. Light rain fell for a few minutes this afternoon, and slowed up the fiery greens a little- At the end of the third round Galloway was leading by a stroke from Murray and B. J. Smith, jun. Galloway picked up another stroke on Murray at the first hole this afternoon, but after that Murray played faultlessly, and reached the turn in 34, four under bogey, to Galloway’s 38. Smith was out in 35, but Murray continued to play beautiful golf coming back, while Smith, who was his partner, fell into error, hooking two balls out of bounds at the fourteenth. Murray’s card for the fourth round was as follows: Out: S, 3,4, 3. 3,4, 3,/ 5, 4. la; 5,5, 3,4, 5,4, 4,3, 4, This card included seven birdies. \ ' Results: —<
