RECITALISTS’ WEEK
ENGAGEMENTS AT 4YA Next week from 4YA several recital programmes will be featured. The first of these will be heard tomorrow night, when Sydney MacEwan (Scottish tenor), Jean Macfarlane (contralto), and Dr V. E. Galway (city organist) will appear before the microphone, the first two in the studio and the latter at the Town Hall. On Monday evening there is to be a special lecturerecital by a visitor from the North Island, Mrs Hester Stansfeld Prior. Monday night’s plays will be a studio production by Noeline Parker and a recorded presentation by George Edwards, while interesting matter in connection with the official opening of the Singapore Base will be broadcast from 10 o’clock. In addition to a series of talks to be given almost daily and nightly, other artists will bo Aileen Young (soprano) on Thursday and Mrs W. Hall Masters (soprano) on Saturday. The following is a choice of the main items to be broadcast:— SUNDAY. 2 p.m.: Tschaikowsky’s ‘ Nutcracker Suite.’ 8.30: A programme of recitals by Dr V. E. Galway (city organist), Sydney Mac Ewan (Scottish tenor), Jean Macfarlane (New Zealand contralto), Josef Szigeti (violinist), and the Boyd Neel String Orchestra. MONDAY. 8.10 p.m.: Mrs Hester Stansfeld Prior presents a lecture-recital, ‘ The Approach to Modern Music.’ 8.40: A talk by Mr J. T. Paul on world affairs. 9.5: ‘ The Reed in the Wood,’ a play by Edwin Lewis, produced in the studios by Noeline Parker. 9.32: ‘ The Mystery Club,’ a story told in a men’s club, produced by George Edwards. . 10: ‘ Singapore, the Lion City, a dramatic survey of the establishment and development of Singapore. 10.30: Rebroadcast of the ceremony In connection with the opening of the Singapore Base. TUESDAY. 8 p.m.: A programme of miscellaneous recordings. ; 8.40: ‘ Social Welfare On a Grand Scale,’ a talk by Mr N. S. Woods. 9.5; A concert by the St. Ealda Band, with, interludes. 9.32 : ‘Eb and Zeb,’ the country storekeepers. 10: Music, mirth, and melody, WEDNESDAY. 10.45 a.m.: ‘ Cooking By Electricity,’ a talk by Mr G. B. Niven. 3.15: ‘Vegetable Preservation,’ a talk by the A.C.E. Home Science Tutorial Section. 8: A variety programme featuring the Port Chalmers Mouth Organ Band and the Radiettes Novelty Trio. 8.42: ‘ Leaves From a Planter’s Notebook (6),’ a recorded talk by Mr Leon Goetz. t 9.5; ‘ls It Sport P’ a theme programme. 10; Dance music. THURSDAY. 8 p.m.: A recorded symphony concert by Continental orchestras, with interludes bv Aileen Young (soprano) and Henri Temianka- (violinist). 8.42: ‘Can We Prepare For Depression?’ a talk by Mr C. G. F. Simkin. 10: Music, mirth, and melody. FRIDAY. ‘10.45 a.m.: ‘Cooking and Recipes,’ a talk bv Miss I. Findlay. 3.15: ‘Window Treatments,’ a talk by the A.C.E. Home Science Tutorial Section. 8; Recorded variety. 8.29: ‘A Sniffer’s Shirt,’ a Japanese houseboy episode. 9.5: Recorded chamber music. 10: Dance music by the Savoy Dance Band. SATURDAY. 8 p.m.: A light concert by the Concert Orchestra, conducted by James Dixon, Mrs W. Hall Masters (soprano), and recorded artists. 9.5: Dance music.
