ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY

JUBILEE CONCERT To celebrate the Dunedin Orchestral Society’s fiftieth anniversary, an outstanding programme has been _ arranged for the concert to be given in the Town Hall Concert Chamber on Wednesday. Mr C. Roy Spackman, the conductor, will be assisted by Dr T. Vernon Griffiths and Mr Alfred Walmsley, who are past conductors. It is to bo regretted that Mr James Coombs, who conducted the orchestra for 42 years, will be unable to be present. Mrs H. C. Campbell will render the Mendelssohn Pianoforte Concerto in G minor, with Dr T. Vernon Griffiths conducting the orchestra. Air Alfred JValmslej will havg tie baton for Jho

performance of the well-known ‘ Merry Wives of Windsor ’ overture. This has always been a favourite orchestral number with both players and public. The other orchestral items, which will be conducted by Mr T. Roy Spackman, are ‘ Finlandia,’ by Sibelius, Prelude ‘ Nero,’ by Coleridge-Taylor, ‘ Three Irish Scenes,’ by Naylor, and Weber’s ‘ Preciosa ’ overture. Miss Ethel Wallace, who was leader of the orchestra for some years, will give a violin solo. The other local musical societies have kindly consented to assist at the function. Members of the Royal Dunedin Male Choir, under the direction of Mr Walmsley, will render items. A group of choristers from the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Choir, conducted by Mr L. E. Borrow, will also assist.
