TRACK RECORDS

FAST TIMES AT FORBORY DEAD HEAT IN THE SPRINT GRACE WELWYN AND ROOKS AHEAD The afternoon was dull, with a cold southerly wind blowing for the opening day of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s Spring Meeting, postponed from Thursday. The attendance, as is usually the ■ case with a postponed meeting, was not as good as on the opening day last year, the gate receipts being down about £4O. This shrinkage in the attendance, and the unusually small fields did not provide a fair test of the change of betting from wm-and-place to the single pool system, and all things considered the totali sator did well to handle £16,442 10s, only £164 less than on the opening day last year. The track had made a splendid recovery from the previous day, and no fewer than six horses wont faster than and another equal to the time records for the course. Towards the close of the afternoon’s programme the course became dusty. In the Progressive Handicap four horses fell, Reymere and Adverse at the end of about a furlong, and Norham Lady and Tafruna at the end of three furlongs, but this was no fault of the track, which reflected credit on those responsible for its remaking. Those present were treated to a splendid afternoon’s racing, and several of the finishes thoroughly tested out the club’s new judge. In at least two instances the public had to await the hoisting of the figures before it was definitely known which horses had won. Mr Hastings’ starting was satisfactory, and the general management of the day’s racing was good, and punctuality was closely observed.
