OPENING OF PUDDING SEASON
Lord Horder was the guest of honour at the I62nd opening of the pudding season at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese in Fleet street. He occupied the cor-ner-of the 270-year-old chop room in which Dr Johnson used to sit. The room was lighted by candles, and in accordance with custom the guests rose in their places to greet with a cheer the pudding as it was carried in. Lord. Horder carried on the tradition of making the first cut from the pudding—in which were plovers, mushrooms, oysters; and steak and kidneys—before it was served to the guests “ so that not a trace should remain.” Afterwards the guests smoked churchwarden pipes and Lord Horder was presented with a tankard for having a longer recollection of the Cheshire Cheese than had any other person'present. He recalled saving his money when a . medical student in order to partake of the famous pudding.
