Mr L. H. Frude left to-day for Auckland’. Miss Bessie Thomson, producer for; the Dunedin Repertory Society, left today for England. _ - Mr H. Christie was appointed Dominion Chief Commission of Scouts at the annual meeting of the Dominion Council of the Boy Scouts’ Association of New Zealand at Wellington yesterday. Mr Christie has been Acting Chief Commissioner since April. Miss Catherine F. Murray, of, the Egypt General Mission, hopes to leave Wellington by the Awatea .on December 7, joining the orient liner Drama at Sydney for Egypt. Mr and Mrs H. Russell were expected to return to Dunedin by this afternoon’s express after a three months’ holiday at Honolulu. On Wednesday evening last the officebearers and members of the congregation of Mac-i Hill Presbyterian Church met in Sim Street Hall to say farewell to Mr and Mrs R. L. Fairmaid. who are leaving the district to reside in Mosgiel. The opportunity was also taken to welcome home Mrs Whyte and Mr J. N. Stewart, who have been on a visit to the Old Country, and Mrs Stewart, who for some months h?a been living in Christchurch. Rev. A, C. W, Standage, Mr Stewart, and Mr Steven paid high tribute to the interest in the life of the congregation taken by Mr and Mrs Fairmaid, Mr Fairmaid having been clerk of the deacons’, court for the past nine years, and wished them every success in their newsphere. A crystal vase and salad bowl were handed to them as small tokens of esteem. Mr Fairmaid, in a few; well-chosen words of acknowledgment, said they were sorry to leave Maori Hill, and that he had thoroughly enjoyed his duties, which had not been onerous. Mr Stewart,_ in humorous vein, spoke briefly of his trip, and on behalf of Mrs Stewart and Mrs Whyte* returned thanks for the welcome. Much-appreciated items contributed uring the evening were solos by Miss Ivy Bain and Mr R. Wentworth* humorous sketches by Mr Val Drew* while Miss Jean Milligan and Mr; Howard Ashworth acted as accompanists. Occasion was taken by Mr Standage to congratulate Mr Wentworth on his approaching marriage in Auckland at Christmas _ time. A Wellington Association message states that Mr James Payne, assistant trade commissioner for Australia in New Zealand, has • been by cablegram that he has been appointed assistant commissioner at Cairo. Mr Payne said Cairo was a new office as far as the Department of Trade was concerned, having only recently been established, with Colonel Hughes as Commissioner. Australia for some years had done considerable trade with Egypt in flour, dairy produce, canned fruits* and other food products, and there appeared to be an opportunity for expanding that trade in the future. Mr K. S. Birrell, M.Sc., A.1.C., wh* has been carrying out investigational work for Public Works irrigation schemes in Canterbury, left this morning for Wellington to take up a position under the Scientific Industrial Research Department.
